to build or not to build

i have found a 81 mazda rx7 that i picked up for 300. i cant decide if i should try to et the car back to running condiotion. it has been sitting for 8 years. the car only has rust on the hood and pass. side front fender. the rear fenders have no signs of rust.

transmission is junk, and the engine hasn't been started since it was parked there due to the tranny.

i know this car is going to need to be gone throu, it is a plain rx, its the dark silver color, with black interior.

i know the car could be saved, its just that i don't know how much work it will need, and i don't want to buy a car that is going to rust to hell in a few years.

what should i do?

Really think aboout it, if you dont have the time or over 2000 grand, I wouldn't. I did the same thing but the rust was in different spots. I thought it would take nothing to get rid of it, but the rust had other plans. Now I have a complete 84gs rolling shell sitting under a tarp in my driveway. I have no clue what to do with it, but I hate to see it rust or go to a dump. It's all up to you, just make sure you can financually go through with it.

Rust free shells are getting harder to find. Make sure you pull the bins and put it up on a hoist and inspect the underneath for hidden rust. If there is none or minimal, hoods, fenders and trannys are easy to come by. Black interior is like finding gold to many members here. Probably the most sought after interior color. Go through the faqs on first gens before you try to start it.

Your biggest problem may be passing metro emmisions in St. L. Nice find.

Do a thorough inspection and make a list of needed repairs. Put a dollar value on them and that should help you decide.

Is it a GSL or GS, if its GSL you get LSD and disc brake rear, trans are easy to replace, engine start procedure is spelled out in here just search. I've resurrected four FBs with a little time and fluids only.

Hints: check radiator along the bottom behind air con condensor (all the bottom falls out),
as stated check under bins for rust, if you are handy most other things are easy fixes.

Do not start or try to until you go through the start up procedure.
