Brake Coolers

We're pulling an old IT7 race car apart when we came across this on the brakes. It appears to be a brake cooling system and had a hose attached running to the front air damn. Has anyone seen anything like this before or who may make / made these?

I've seen them, a lot of 2nd Gen owners will fabricate their own as well. I saw them actually on a 3rd Gen at my shop and asked the guy what the deal was. He said they were brake coolers, and also said that they're more beneficial on the track, since braking happens a lot and cool brakes are always a welcome. However, with regular driving, they're not that much of a help. Course, it does depend on what your driving conditions are.

Interesting, this set looks almost prefabricated or at least someone with some serious fabrication skills made them. Even the paint was heavy duty. Thanks for the input :)

I always thought braking coolers were a welcome, which they are, of course. Look at all these high-end, six digit, super cars. They have ducting for their brakes. If I were to make brake cooling ducts, I'd put some fine wire mesh in there to avoid large chunks of dirt getting onto/into the brakes.

I've seen it before but I haven't seen any companies that offer it for our cars. Basically it just diverts air to the backside of the rotors to aid in cooling. Perfect for a car like mine where there is ducting holes already in the air dam.

man, I need to find out who makes these!

I'm not sure what they look like, but mazdamotorsports do have some version of a brake cooler, I believe they have to be welded on.

Gsl-Se's already have a built in scoop off of the front backing plate. I can't remember if the carb models of 84-85 had something similar or not. :)

Nice, I just found the catalog from Mazda Motorsports that had them. I guess I will just sell them as I only have a GSL-SE :) Thanks for all the responses!

I need to fab something up for mine since I don't even have backing plates for the TII brake upgrade. My air dam has the inlets for the ducts built in already. If it doesn't get cooling ducts, I'll install some fog lights if I can find a pair to fit the holes.

All 84-85 cars have the little slits cut in the backing plate.......thats why the 84-85's came with a vented front valence,to allow air to pass to those brake vents.
