bought an engine for my 1st gen!
 

today i drove about 180 miles up to Ashland, Ohio and picked up a used 12A out of an '85 that had been rolled. The engine fired right up when I tested it and has even compression, so tomorrow night I'm going to start installing it in my '84 thats been sitting in the garage forever. I'll have pics as soon as I get here running again!
A few quick questions though; I shouldn't see any difference between the '84 12A I had and the newer '85 12A should I? I think it will be a direct swap. I'm going over to the dealer to get some new o-rings for the oil cooler thingy tomorrow, it looks like it was leaking and the fellow I bought it from said I should go ahead and replace them now, while its out of the car.
This will be my 2nd install so hopefully no problems. I think I"m going to keep the car if it runs well and sell my '90 GXL, so you guys will have alot of questions from me in the next few weeks!
Can't wait to get started. . .
anything else I should inspect/replace BEFORE I drop it in???

If it has A/C... BE CAREFUL!!!!

I work with those systems, and when someone does an engine swap, they usually jostle around the compressor and the lines, causing them to break.

So, be very cautious how you handle the ac if it has it.

Also, just a suggestion. If you clutch is more than 3/4 gone, replace it while the tranny is showing. It'll save you some work later on...

a header would be a good upgrade and it would be easier since you have the manifold off.

Reseal the oil pan, so you don't have to lay on the ground and do it. Unless you have a lift. If you have a lift, I hate you. :p I want a lift.

Anyway, if you do a clutch job, replace the rear main seal too.

Dude.. A lift isnt as expensive as most people would think. It's like 3g's for a relatively good lift. Alls you need is a 12 foot ceiling or outdoors, cement or asphalt floor, and 208 or 240 Volt power source.

damn. too late, I already dropped her in. That oil pan was pretty nasty too (my shirt is never coming clean I know it.) I've noticed a few minor difference between some of the vacuum line and such, since this is an '85 motor and my car is an '84. Anyways, I got it in tonite and I'm going to do the final touches tomorrow then try and start it. I'm going to get some pics so you guys will know what I'm talking about when I start asking about where this and that goes to. . .still have a few loose ends. ..

hey where does that little nozzle on the bottom of the passenger side, under the carb and upper manifold, go to? It point directly to the back of the car, I think its the brake assist or something, but I cant find a hose for it. Any clues what I'm talking about?

If its the one I'm thinking about, I think its for the cats or something. I missed it when I took my solenoid rack off, and my car wouldn't idle until I plugged it off.

Hey man, every time you talk about your Panasports, I see a newish Camaro in the driveway in front of your 7... Sell that and you should be able to get at least 3 grand.. probably enough to buy the lift, an air compressor, and a nice, full set of Crastsman tools; though not enough for Snap On or Mac tools.

That sounds like the vacuum line to the power brake booster.
If you don't have power brakes plug it. There may be a second output there. The one closest to the engine is an emisions piece so block it off the other one (you will know this one as it is theaded) is for you r power brakes.

I'm going to be selling my engine very soon. It has 104000 original KILOMETRES so like 60000 miles on it. Im gonna sell it with the tranny and all of the other stuff so the engine can run. Looking for 1500 OBO. Dont forget this is Canadian dollars. about 800-900 American
