Bolt Size

This bolt has given me some serious problems and I need to get another one. The guy at Fastenal couldn't match it up so I thought someone on here would know the exact size. It is the longer bolt (rear) that connects the wheel spindle to the steering linkage, see attached.

The part number there contains the size info as part of the number, IIRC. It'll be a JIS-sized bolt, though, which makes it a little harder to find than US Metric or ISO.
Did you try asking at a Mazda dealer? Many of the common bolt sizes (the ones listed by the long part numbers instead of the 5-digit reference codes) were used across multiple models, and are still available. |

No need for fastenal, rural king has em right now. Hell I got one if you 'have to' have the exact bolt. Or if your really resourceful use a lug bolt, put it in a vice and knock the cap off it. Use a reverse torx socket and your good to go. |
For future fastener needs, Maryland Metrics has a very good assortment . . . and they're right around the corner.
Well, I didn't really check the distance, but you're state's about the size of my county, so it can't be too far away :). |

I asked someone at Mazda and all he could tell me is "it's a bolt and they don't have any."
Maryland Metrics is pretty close to me, so I'll check them out. I was going to order one for $4.95 but I want it by tomorrow so the car can be ready for autox on Saturday. I can make something work temporarily, but I would like to get the original spec bolt back sometime. |
^Sounds like you went to a lazy dealership. If you give the parts guy that part number that j9fd3s provided then he should be able to get it for you.
Or go to www.yourcarpart.com or some similar site and order it there. Looks like it's $3.50 on that site, and probably only a dollar or two for shipping... |

I believe the "-1235" portion indicates that it's a 12mm dia x 35mm long bolt. The rest of the number breaks down a code that indicates that it's a bolt, its head type (hex, flange, shoulder, etc) and strength rating (generally 6 or 8 on our cars on the JIS system) but I don't have the translation info.
If you look at enough of the other bolt items in the parts fiche and compared them to known bolts on the car, you could probably decipher most of the table pretty easily - - find another bolt that you actually have on the car, and that starts with "9975-01" and you know everything you need to replace it - - or to take the other bolt to the hardware place and say "I need one just like this, but 35mm long." In example, the "short" knuckle bolt right next to your target on the drawing is the exact same part number except it ends in "25". Bet you a cookie it's an identical bolt but only 25mm long... |
