BNR Supercars 1st gen Dynos! (VIDS)

Hey Guys.

Just though I would share this with ya. I got done building this car in June of this year and blew it up within 50 miles. Well to make a long story short, Steve Kan called me middle of last week and said he would be in town for a few days.

The job started at 10am friday morning and removed the engine out of the 1st gen, and pulled out all the bad parts (apex seals, rotor housing, and rotor). Fixed the rotor up, installed new apexes, ported another rotor housing and reassembled the engine. That 8 pm Friday night the car was running again! I put about 3 miles on the engine on Saturday and checked for leaks. Sunday we drove the car 12 miles to the dyno where it was beat in not broke in :D.

After an hour and a half the car was tuned up to 20 psi of boost and it made a peak power of 440.2 RWHP and 355 RWTQ. The car weighs in at 2200 lbs. Boy does this thing fly!

Mods include:

race ported 13BREW
HKS cast divided turbo manifold with HKS 50mm wastegate
Profect B boost controller
62-1 T04B (.85 A/R compressor housing) with P trim turbo with 1.00 A/R divided T4 turbine housing
3.5" down pipe, 3" custom stainless exhaust 2 magnaflows
Isuzu NPR Large intercooler with 2.5" in pipe and 2.75" out pipe
Tial BOV, K&N filter, ACT clutch
T2 transmission with 1g tail housing and shifter assembly (bolt in)
Haltech E6K
550/1600 injectors
Walbro intank pump (custom)
MSD 6A on leading coil/ignitor
2nd generation ignition system

I guess whats next is better brakes, suspension and rear diff!

HMM setup sounds similar to ducktapes other then he has a bridge port.

Bryan@BNR 08-18-07 07:17 AM

Thanks guys.

I am trying to get wheels for the front now. Does anyone have any info on converting the 1g suspension over to a T2 front suspension?

Look into respeed's conversion kits for the 1st gen. They can hook you up with T2 brakes, and a rack and pinion conversion kit.
They have 2 types of brake kits. One for 84-85 that uses the complete T2 calipers/rotors (5 lug), and another that fits everything except the GSL-SE and allows use of 4x110 or 4x114.3 (4x4.5) wheels.

This is a common setup for a reason..... not just in 1st gens.

Just so you know, I am running the 84-85 12A strut tubes with the conversion kit. It doesn't matter what model you use as long as they are the later "big bearing style. I am using T2 five lug hubs and 4 piston brakes. Just to confuse the issue even a little further, my rear is a 84-85 GSL housing, with a SE diff section and the Moser SE axles.

The only difference I can see is the SE componments have a built in spacer for the wheel offset. My rear rims are a +35 with no spacers and the fronts and like a +25 and I am using a 1/2 billet spacers, 12A stuff needs a overall offset of +12-+15 or so.

Awesome build out, sounds wickly fast.

Congratulations! Another member of the TurboFB crew.

I have to say though, it sounds like there is some kind of restriction.
For a 62-1, at 20 PSI, it seems to take forever to spool. Make sure the Turbo is in good shape.
Even at 15 PSI, my car reves up and bounces off the rev limiter without even trying.

Any chance you selling stickers like that in your sig? I Like!

Sure do, pm me your address and I will send you out two this week, I would be somewhat honored if you stuck one on your car. Shameless plug, also check out our cafe press store my wife set up, www.cafepress.com/turbofbcrew

Thanks.

What exactly is a race port?

A race port is an extended port (porting up) and also the port timing is changed by porting closer to the inner coolant seal groove. So a race port is typically a big street port.

The turbo is laggy partly b/c the temp outside was 100F and it was muggy. The same turbo on the 1st gen dynoed 435 RWHP at 17.5 psi on my FD. The FD had 14 psi of boost by 3K RPM in 4th gear on the hwy in the winter time. Since the summer isn't great for turbos, it didn't respond like I wanted it too. I am happy with the power it made. Not much time was put into bottom end tuning. I told steve I could handle the drivabilty tuning.

When the temp drops outside, I will stick it back on the wide band and tweak on the timing a bit and see if I can get better response. But for now, I have issues with wheels/suspension. I want a safe driving car #1. It will eventually be a daily driver with a/c and full interior.

Sounds like you have it under control.

Keep in mind that I am referencing your video to many Turbo rotaries from South Florida. (The Capital of Heat and humidity, all year long)

Bryan@BNR 08-19-07 01:37 PM

Although it doesn't seem to make boost well on the bottom, at the PSI its running the powerband is good from 4K on up. It will only get better when the temp drops. Also keep in mind the engine has 8.5-1 compression rotors.

My goal was 400 RWHP. It was either choose between the stage 3 twins for the FD or the 62-1 Kit I had. Since I put the T2 water pump and 1g front cover on the engine the turbos wouldn't clear the water pump.

The car is plenty fast enough and will be very entertaining to drive everyday. My 323 GTX is in need of a transmission and a clutch so I guess I'll have to put it down in the winter for work.

Sounds good. I hate hot days trying to tune a turbo. But get her out on a cool night and man................what a differance. 13BREW in a first gen was what I've been wanting to get my hands on, but my weapon of choice right now is a 12A blowthrough. Oh to dream...............

Nice Bryan, glad to see you took my advice and decided to post all this stuff up on the forum, I told you it would get a great reception :)

The hp to weight ratio on that car is insane, sounds great too :icon_tup:

Hey Rich,

Too bad april was too soon to come to deals gap to meet you guys from NJ. I will be damn sure to have it ready for the next DGRR. I promise!
