WTF? Cant get trailing timing right...

Well my 2nd gen ignitor pack went out on me yesterday (I have the v2 transistor trick installed, waiting on updated one!) so I put my car back on the 1st gen ignitor/coil until I get everything together to put it back to 2GDFIS. I had to readjust my timing and I put the leading timing was put back to factory setting (I dont have my manual here to list the degrees...). The engine rumbled some on decel after revving it to ~ 6500 but I remembered that it did that before I installed the TT and before I had my timing light (so I never checked timing previously). I checked the trailing timing and it was on the wrong side of the leading mark (so wayyy off). I adjusted the trailing timing as much as I could but I am only able to get it back to the leading mark so Im still like 10-15 degrees off. So my question is why cant I get my trailing timing back to where it wants to be? I have swapped the leading j109 ignitor out with a parts car one with no change. The plug wires are on correctly. Rotor /cap look ok and are pretty new. Any ideas?

I must say how I was amazed how well the car ran on trailing ignition only. It managed to get me home through about 20 miles of traffic! I love this car!

Hey Erik,

The ignitor plugs are probably switched. The front ignitor (leading) should have a YL and and BY wires. The trailing (closest to alt) should have YG and BY. If those are fine, check at the coils. The front coil should be trailing (YG and BY) and the rear coil is leading (YL and BY). If all that is fine, the only other thing would be that the plug/coil wires are in the wrong spot. Good luck.

Thanks Kent, I'll recheck everything tommorow in the daytime with a fresh mind. It sucks working on your car at night using shop lights laid on the car to see. I may have swapped the ignitor plugs during the TT install and probably didnt notice with the reduced need for the trailing spark.
