Blow Through Turbo or save for EFI?
 

There seem's to be a lot more knowledge when it comes to doing a blow through turbo set up compared to the Datsun community but most of my local friends are Datsun guys so when ever I talk blow through they just skoff it off and say switch to EFI.

Im going to be getting a bit of spending money after I sell my Datsun and I would like to spoil the RX7 a bit. I realize swapping a 13bt in would probably be the same price as building a blow through system for my 12a but I already have a weber 45dcoe and the manifold.

If I buy a new motor I want to to take it apart and get it ported which is why im thinking I would be better off doing a blow through on the 12a and then if I decide to switch to EFI I can always sell the setup.

Im not looking to make huge numbers as its a daily/autoX car and im only wanting to run between 6-10lbs of boost.

Also if anyone has done a blow through setup and wished they had not, It would be nice to know why.

I've had both. 370@18 psi on a blow through Holley.
507@20 psi on an old Haltech E6K (dinosaur by today's standards).

Both fun, but the drivability, power curve, and reliability of the EFI was night and day
Compared to the pig rich, gas smelling, lean running, Holley.

Save for EFI. had both and my completely untuned efi is still better than the blowthrough

K-Nives I'm in your same position. I wanted to stay old school and run my carb with a blow through setup. They've been tried and proven many times over and the relative lack of electronics made it a great option for me (I hate fiddling with electronics and I seem to have a higher than average failure rate when it involves electrical anything!) I bought a complete blow through turbo setup and was planning on installing this winter. Circumstances and a bit of luck came my way and I ended up owning a complete 13bt engine,drivetrain, Microtech LT8 standalone, and ALL associated accessories (huge FMIC, Fuel system,Wideband AFR etc.)
Both systems are great. But the deciding questions are:
1) How much am I willing to spend on installation?
2) How simple will tuning either of these systems be?
3) What are the HP goals I'm looking for?
4) Is it going to be a daily driver or a weekend warrior?
When I figure those out I'll know what direction I'm heading in.

Too bad to dont live near Delaware. I build very streetable holleys and offer free help. If you lived closer i would recommend the blow through. Tuning a holley turbo or not takes experience and knowlage. I drive my FC more than my rx8.

I just got done with a Holley blow through setup on mine, I was able to get it very close in all ranges and ran a crutched setup for the power valve. Rock steady reliable setup, I love it but have proven my point with it and have learned about EFI in the meantime. I am parting it out and am installing my stuff this coming month, let me know if you are interested in the complete setup I have for sale, we can work something out.

I've made a lot of improvements to holleys for rotary. I'm getting 17 to a recent 20.4mpgs if you ever need help with a carb contact me.

I also tecomend you eliminate trailing with blowthrough. It helps prevent detonation and allows you t use a programmable ignition on the leading. More timing without boost = more mpgs and power.

Even with EFI you need to find a good tuner.

for do it yourself , cheap, fast and fun. blowthrough. if you have deep pockets and a good tuna near by such as Directfreak does efi is the way to go
