best bang for buck?
 

hey everyone i have an 85 gs and i was wondering if anyone could help out with my car. it has the 12a motor without the rats nest the carb has mechanical secondaries and after i got done doing all that i found out i have bad compression so im gonna buy some new apex seals but i dont know which ones to buy. and i also was wondering what i would have to do to get me to about 14 second quarter mile times. I was thinking of doing my own turbo setup cause i can fab most of the stuff up and i already have a turbo. but is there anything eelse that i could do that wont caust me more than like a grand or so. thanks.

Well, I hope you don't plan on a budget of $1000 for the whole build. A rebuild on the engine if you do it yourself is going to be probably $1500 just for a proper rebuild. Could be more depending on how the internal parts look. As for a turbo, you'll have to turbo prep the Nikki carb, get a 13B turbo manifold or an aftermarket 13B turbo mani to match your turbo, then fab up an exhaust from there. A 3" exhaust with a good size turbo on 10-12 psi boost with a nice size intercooler should net you about 230-250hp. That will get you about a low 14 second quarter, mabey into the 13's. Either way plan on about a $2500 budget mabey more.

actually i was just reading another thread and i wasnt aware that 12a housings are not made anymore and my motor has 196000 miles on it so maybe i should just save up and put a 13 b na in there. how much do you think that would cost/where would be a good place to get one.

to help a lil before u take this any further on what u think u need
tear the motor down and of story without know whats damaged u dont know what ur in for if ya need help on tearing it down we are glad to help um up to my 8th engine for a tear down just bein lazy:)

If the motor has nearly 200k on it, then you might be better off looking for a low mileage replacement. If you try to rebuild the one you have, you may find that too many parts are worn out and in need of replacement which will drastically increase the costs.

As far as mods go, you pretty much have to start with exhaust before any other mods (other than brakes and suspension) will pay off. A decent system will set you back around 800.00

As for other mods, I think the highest value is:

1. Ignition upgrade. Check out the Transistor Trick thread (about 80 pages long).

2. Racing Beat swaybar. 110.00 and it will make a drastic difference in how the car feels when cornering.

However, before you begin any type of modding, you want to make sure all of the basic stuff is taken care of first. Here's a partial list:

1. Brakes! If your brakes are not perfect, then make them so before you start chasing horsepower.

2. Front end steering components. Tie rod ends, ball joints, idler arm, bushings, etc. With that many miles, all of these parts are going to be ready for replacement. If you wait until something brakes you will probably regret it (if you survive the sudden loss of control).

3. Cooling system. Radiator, hoses, etc.

4. Electrical system. Battery cables.

5. Any typical tune up stuff. Cap and rotor, spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, FUEL FILTER, etc.
