bend your own exhast pipes?

was bored looking around ebay and came across some stuff like this.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=50893

now i know its not a mandrel bender.. but how do you think the pipes come out?

*yes im aware of the pics... and aim aware this one is only a 2" bender... there are some that are 3" benders on ebay this one just had a good pic*

Stoops417 01-10-04 01:10 AM

ive had many exaust systems made with this type of bender, it doesn't have the "acordian crushed" inside of the bend, they do perform ok. Not as well as a Mandrel but... still pretty good.

just like in this picture

It's great for roll cages.

81Rex6port13b 01-10-04 01:42 AM

hmmm i might have to purchase one like this.

Rx7carl 01-10-04 06:46 AM

The info I got on these is that they are great for pipe, but they wont bend tubing correctly. The mandrels are sized for iron pipe and will not work on tubing you would use on rollcages or exhaust systems.

I dunno. The Ad states:

PERFECT FOR ALL TYPES OF AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS

Installing a Roll-cage or Custom Bumper on your 4x4, Van or Buggy?

This unit will bend 6 different size pipes from 1/2" to 2"

Yea but the description says
"Hydraulic Pipe Bender not tube bender (used)"

Tube is measured by the OD and Pipe is not. It will not work for cages.

This will explain:

my friend has one thats the same design as that. it works decent, but will crush thinner stuff. we did a friend's celica's exhaust with it and it turned out pretty good. it really depends on the pipe you use

Rx7carl 01-10-04 11:03 AM

What pipe did you use? Dia? wall thickness?

rotorysuzuki 01-10-04 11:12 AM

I have a similar one and bend great roll cages as long as you use schedule 40 black iron pipe the shoes dont work well on exaust or dom tube unless you dont care if it looks funny -crushed

onepointone 01-10-04 11:21 AM

i dont remember, ill ask him and see if he remembers

Rx7carl 01-10-04 11:45 AM

sch40 pipe is not suitable for rollbars/cages unless its for cosmetic purposes only.

Just curious to know onepointone, thanks in advance.

rotorysuzuki 01-10-04 11:53 AM

I use it on all my cages and have cartwheeled a time or 2 and it works great maybe you cant for auto x but tough truck racing its fine

Rx7carl 01-10-04 12:01 PM

Really? thats legal? The SCCA wont even accept ERW anymore. Must be DOM only. AFAIK, NASCAR is similar.

You could always spend a fortune and get an english wheel.

i picked that ebay one bacuase it had a pic of a pipe bent with the product.

here is another one
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2453560720

this one say tube. up to 3"

Re-Speed.com 01-10-04 03:03 PM

Neither will work. You need to read the link I posted above and this one:
http://www.lowbucktools.com/benders.html

The bender itself is not the problem it is the dies that come with it. You will only get "pipe" dies. "pipe" dies will not work with "tube" used for cages or exhaust.

These would work:

ahhhh gotcha... thanks.

tubing bender cost more hmmmm would be a worth wile investment if i would use it more thant twice i assume.

jorx81@aol.com 01-10-04 10:50 PM

i have one one of those it definetly won't bend exhaust pipe, or anything with a thin wall, 1/8" is about as low as it goes
