Which bellhousing bolt goes where?

2 Attachment(s)
I got the dumb bellhousing bolts all mixed up, and can't figure out which one goes where. I have (what I believe to be) the starter bolts laid aside separately, so thankfully they aren't involved in this mixup. I have figured out that bolt #5 goes in location E, but after that I'm stuck.

Can someone help with bolts #1 thru #4? Are they even the right bolts? The previous owner changed out the clutch before I bought Gus, and he did a pretty crappy job. He stripped the hole in the bellhousing for the bottom starter bolt, and one of the holes for the slave cylinder. I fixed those today. So, there is a chance that these aren't even the correct bolts. He wasn't as picky as I am.

Help me figure out if these are the right bolts for the bellhousing, and where they are supposed to go.

Thanks,
Jamie

the difference is in the thickness on the trans bellhousing.

really doesn't matter which goes where but the long one(5) is the top starter bolt. 4 is usually the one at the top(B) which is threaded from the engine side with the piece that u pull the engine by, and a nut on the tranny side. 1 may also be the other starter bolt, which means ur missing one.

Auto or stick? If manual, two of your bolts are wrong. You need one more of #1 and a rear lifting hook bolt, which I'm not seeing in your pic.

It goes like this:

A 1
B not shown in pic *
C 4
D 1 (need another one!)
E 5

* this bolt is used for rear lifting hook. Could possibly be #4, but I think it needs to be a bit longer as there is a nut that's also involved.

Jeff, it's a manual. Do you have a picture of what bolt B should look like?

Does anyone know where these bellhousing bolts are listed at in the parts fiches? I want to buy the missing bolt that Jeff is talking about, but I CANNOT find these things in the parts diagrams. I have looked thru the whole thing 5 times. Are they in there? I found the 2 starter bolts no problem, but I don't need those. I need that one bellhousing bolt, but I can't find it in the parts fiche! Arrrrgh!

Not sure of your year; looking at 84-85 fiche:

Some of them look to be "999" 'Standard Part ' numbers (generic Mazda bolt callouts rather than part-numbered items) on the clutch assembly page. 1600A-1 (Clutch Disk & Cover), section, engine, page 1-L5. Top bolts and nut are clearly there, but just kind of float mid-diagram with no lines to em. Looks like there was supposed to be a ghosted sketch of the bellhousing there that didn't get picked up when scanned.

The starter bolts are on 1800A-1 "Engine Electrical System," also 999 numbers.

Add: Yep; numbers are clear enough in the 81-83 fiche (page 1-C5, section 1600A-1) to see how Mazdatrix kinda reverses sections of the numbers around for their own purposes: Mazda part 997961035 is Mazdatrix number 61-350-9979

Much clearer pic from the SA parts book; def section 1600A (Clutch)

Okay guys, for future reference Jeff was dead on. I went out and did some measuring on the engine, transmission, and the bolts that I had. #2 and #3 are imposters, just like Jeff deduced. There isn't an ideal location for them anywhere. They are always either too long or too short for every hole. I think the previous owner grabbed them from his spare bolts bucket in a jam.

So the following is correct:

A-1
B- I'm missing it
C-4
D-1, I need another
E-5

I will get a bolt for B from Mazdatrix. No problem there. However, Mazdatrix lists different numbers for bolts A and D. Why? According to Jeff they are the same. But according to Mazdatrix they have listing for top left and bottom right. See below, respectively:

Which one do I need? It looks like the lower right bolt is slightly longer than the upper left. But I'm not sure which one I currently have in my posession......

Your pix's no worky, sir... Or might be Mazdatrix's server is temp down, as I can't reach it just now.

I would recommend using the Mazda stock numbers & asking a dealer to look up the specs for you. Since they are standardized numbers (not model-specific) they may well still be in the parts system, and their computer might still be able to pull the specs (such as length).

I did a test with Google; those Mazda 999 numbers are actually searchable. 9997961035, for example, is used in B2200's, B2600's, MX-6's, MX-3's... as well as Ford applications. You can likely get all of them from a dealer, avoid shipping.

Looking at the numbers, I've got a hunch (you can test it with a metric ruler) that the 9997961035 is an M10x35mm bolt, or has 35mm threaded section, or some other logical translation like that....

the explanation for the bolts is in the front of the microfische, when you type it into the mazda computer it just says bolt.

off the top, the first 4 tell you what KIND of bolt, 9979, is like this, 9994 is a nut, etc. if we wanted to go further, 9956 is a drain plug washer, 9935 is vacuum hose.

second two are the diameter/thread. there is some decoder in the fische. with the drain plug washer, 21 is copper, 41 is aluminum

the last 3/4 numbers are the length. so a 9979-61-035 is 35mm long and a 9979-61-045 is 45mm long. for the washer, 400 is the oil pan, 40mm? 600 is for the turbo, and 800 is the oil cooler.
so a copper oil cooler washer is 9956-21-800. aluminum is 9956-41-800.

I looked thru my fiche and parts book both; they mention the "Standard Parts List" as an external document.

Literally, all it says is:

(4) STANDARD PART NUMBER
Those parts which are standardized in form, dimension, material, etc., such as bolts, nuts, washers, etc. are called "Standard Parts". In most cases, Standard Part Numbers are shown on the illustration instead of via the D-Code, and are distinguished from D-Code by the number which consists of nine or ten digits starting with "9", e.g., 99862-04168. Those parts do not appear in the text and part number index.

Standard Parts are listed in numerical sequence after General parts. (Note: those parts which do not have D-Code are not listed in the index.)

MAZDA STANDARD PARTS
Those parts which are standardized in form, dimension such as Bolts, Nuts, Washers, Hoses, Disc Wheels, etc. are called Mazda Standard Parts.
For further details and examples, refer to the wall chart, "LIST OF STANDARD PARTS".
(it then gives a breakdown of the digit significance but no translations)

Nowhere does it contain a key to the standard parts coding.

I'm betting someone who could score a copy of that wall chart, or the actual Standard Parts List, would be pretty highly appreciated round here. :egrin::nod::icon_tup:

I am glad someone else posted this question. When my motor went out about a year ago, i pulled my motor and cant find near one bolt now, lol. Great thread.
