Bell Housing VS Oil Pan for engine mount swap?

GSL-SE

I've seen proponents for both.... oil pan seems better as it's further fwd/closer to the mount to reduce it's torque moment. Also it's nice and flat... I can see how a jack and a 2x4 across it would work, but how likely is it for me to screw-up my oil pan?

Help!

Are you talking about jacking up the engine to change motor mounts? If so, the sump is sturdy enough if you lay a 2x4 across it then jack it up from below with a floor jack or scizzor jack. Works well, but realize the whole car will also rise up so you gotta jack it a bit. :)

Cool Jeff Thx... It worked great!

After having already unbolted the BOTTOM stock mount bolts I lifted it a little until I could see pressure was off and I had play with the stock mounts. I then removed the 4 front engine mount bolts and took it off as an assembly.

Worked like a charm!

What type of motor mounts will replace the old ones?

flight_of_pain 04-12-13 09:42 PM

I always use hockey pucks :)

DivinDriver 04-12-13 09:54 PM

Aaaah, the "Rickles mount."

Jeff20B 04-12-13 10:52 PM

double post.

I don't get it.

I'm throwing hockey pucks in the brown car. The RB front mount bar showed up today!

The mazda comps... I just took her out and WOW!!! No more bullshit humpty dance in 1st or reverse. Much tighter! Responsiveness is MUCH better. I only noticed an increase in cabin vibration when idling or v. low rpm, certainly nothing I consider a con... the feedback is excellent. EXACTLY what I was looking for. Still wanna do the tranny mount and xmember bushings but it's certainly become less of a priority after these results.

Bottom line: If you have an SE on original mounts I highly recommend the Mazda comp mounts.

I have zero experience with hard mounts or anything other than stock. For me, the Mazda Competition mounts nearly resolved the problem I had with the "looseness" and slop in the drivetrain. Likely a comp tranny mount would compliment this setup and is next on the list of upgrades.

I removed the lower engine mount bolts first from underneath, then jacked up the shallow part of the oilpan w/a 2x6 cut to fit until the pressure was off. Once I could get play between the mounts and the subframe I unbolted the front engine mount. and removed it as an assembly. I then cleaned it up and reinstalled it w/the comp mounts.

I prefer competition mounts and would like to get some some day. It's an SE and it already has a competition tranny mount.

I used all comps in my REPU. Big difference and it went from awful to awesome!

My brother's GSL-SE had all stock mounts and the trans mount had separated from the steel It was super sloppy in 1st and reverse. It made launches a laughing matter. I didn't know about comps back then, as I would have insisted on them. The tranny mount was swapped to another stocker which helped, but comps would have been for the best.

Edit: you painted them?

I get it. But I'm old.

I didn't know the SE had the comp tranny mount as stock... cool.

Yeah I painted them :p: I'm one of "those" guys hehe. When dressing up I either strip with a wire wheel and polish the bare metal and clear seal, clean and repaint black if needed or hit it with red. All paint is the high temp engine enamel stuff.

I'll take a pic of the bay and post it later.

Ran her again this AM and launching has gone from "barely tolerable" to "enjoyable" :icon_tup:

How did you get that from what I wrote? They all came with stock stuff. Hence "stock", you know, OEM? As in stock? heh

The goofy looking red airbox is my attempt at an insulated ram-cai setup. Got the idea from Rx7Carl and Pratch at Mazspeed.

It's ugly yes, but form followed function. Ideally I'll cover it with a black sheet of metal. No problems with the setup so far thankfully. A few weak points to address but it seems to hold pressure and seal fairly well. I'm debating wrapping the whole intake up to the TB like they did, but might give it a try. It can be easily removed if need be.

Yeah my bad, all is clear now... I misunderstood when you said

"I prefer competition mounts and would like to get some some day. It's an SE and it already has a competition tranny mount."
I thought you meant the SEs came with the comp tranny mount as OEM/stock. I realize you meant you've already upgraded to the comp tranny mount... huhuh durrr

Jeff20B 04-14-13 02:37 AM

Oh, ok. I can see where it might have been confusing.

jaman 04-14-13 08:13 PM

okay....so who sells the competition mounts....

Johnny_Cracker 04-15-13 10:01 AM

The usual guys.... RB, Atkins, Mazdatrix. Around $63 per mount.
