Bad gas tank news

I gotta get a new gas tank. I sent it for repair and they said there's too much rust inside (the car had been sitting for 2 years). So I took the one off my parts car, it doesn't seem to leak but I wanted to get it rebuilt anyway and they said they can rebuild that tank but it will cost an extra 125$. So I called Mazda, they can get a new tank for 445$ Canadian, but it's backorder and they'll phone back tomorrow to tell me an approximate date. I checked the Victoria British catalog and they don't sell gas tanks.

I'm sure a lot of you have changed your gas tanks, my question is did you get it rebuilt or did you buy a new one from Mazda? Is 445$ a reasonable price (gas tank only, no labour, no gauge sender). I need this tank real quick, I'm storing my Rex at the end of october, and the tank can't be leaking for obvious reasons...

My Rex deserves a new tank!! Ordered from Mazda, 445$ Canadian, plus 19$ for the in-tank fuel filter. I also tried ordering the whole plumbing thing (the tubes that go in the tank and connect to the fuel pump), but it's discontinued. Not that it's broken or anything, just a little rusty. I should receive by October 16, straight from Japan!

All salvage yards that have RX7s are 2nd gens, I've never seen 1st gens in all salvage yards I've been to this year. You US people have it real good!! No rust, no road salt, no winter. Truth is, most cars in Quebec won't see their 12th birthday...

Thanks for your suggestions!

Have you heard of "POR 15" ? They sell a gas tank sealer that will work on some of the worst rusted hulks and the stuff really does work! Provided you have a tank...
