Back at it

Whats up everyone, I took a break and am back at it now. I just picked up a 79 that I am going to bring back to life. Got it from the original owner and it sat for 9 years. Rebuilt/modified the carb, stripped the rats nest, set timing, and she starts right up. Its been at least 7 years since I had a 1st gen so I am anxious to get going on the build. I've been around the block with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gens and im looking forward to having some fun.

Sounds like a good start. I'm curious, what modifications did you do to the carb? I'm getting ready to crack mine open and I've considered stripping the rats nest too.

I stripped off all of the extra stuff on the carb, converted to mechanical secondaries, drilled out the axial jet and nozzles, dobled the gasket on the accelerator pump, drilled and tapped all of the extra holes (oil metering, choke, vacuum secondaires) to put plugs in them instead of JB weld. Overall the car runs SMOOOOOOTTHHHHH now and throttle response is way better.

All of those things sound good to me, except the mechanical secondaries. I don't mind the vacuum ones, it reminds me of Variable Intake Charge System on the B series 4 cylinders.

Are you talking about the B-Series Honda/Acura Motors (B16, B18)?

I like the feel of the mechanical secondaries as it is one less thing to worry about.

Mazda B series like what came in the Protege LX/Escort GT/Familia GT.

wow, that car looks dead. what are your plans?

As for me, washing and waxing, removing rim corrosion are on my list, waywayway down at the bottom. Last night I changed the oil. Tonight is replacing a turn signal bulb, and maybe changing the front brake line.

BTW, what did you pay for it?

scott.florschuetz 05-11-17 10:01 PM

It most definitely was dead lol. Building up suspension, rolling the 12a until it blows and then dropping in a 13b 4port. planning on leaving the outside as is but rebuilding the interior.
