Anyone Think Neon Is "Ricey"?

I was considering putting some neon on my car, but I was afraid that the mass consensus was that it would be considered ricey...Im gonna do it either way cause its my car not yours, but I was just wondering. I plan on putting two 9" rods under the dash over the foot areas, two 9" rods in the amp compartment for my custom box, LED (neon look-alike) shifter knob, and street glow, all in blue. Maybe even a few other various neon accents, but I fell that it will all be in good taste and "accent" the car...but thats just IMO. Anyone else like neon?

Felix Wankel 03-25-02 02:19 AM

Not on cars or trucks. I have a couple 8'' tubes on my sportbike though.

79+80_rx-7 03-25-02 02:28 AM

Why not save for an engine? :D not to be a dick or anything, just an idea :D LATERz

adssoccer 03-25-02 08:19 AM

im with you, i would save for intake, exhaust, and other go fast stuff. i'd rather be in a fast pos than a slow cool-looking thing. but your question, i personally thing it would be ricey

coldy13 03-25-02 08:31 AM

I think neons look sweet. If you want to go flashey like that, it'd be cool to get some led valve caps too. I have some brignt orange ones, they only turn on when your wheels are spinning and only when its dark. They are only $40 for 4 at www.overboost.com and i think that includes shipping.

Orange!FD 03-25-02 08:40 AM

rice

gamble302 03-25-02 09:36 AM

if you like it go for it. doesnt matter what anyone else has said. i personally dont like it, and besides that my suspension is so harsh and i go over so many potholes and rough rouds i bet id shatter em or put a rock through one. plus i dont want any extra attention, they already hear me comin well ahead of time. lets just say i dont ring too many doorbells anymore when im giving people rides... felix is right though imo, cause if youre on most sport bikes, you cant paint it with clouds and rainbows and unicorns and nobody can tell you crap cause its plenty fast. wait til you get it runnin good enough to hold its own, then do whatever you want

hamster 03-25-02 12:27 PM

The only thing more RICEY would be a fart can or a three tear wing!!!

itzweapon 03-25-02 12:57 PM

Gay-onz

please.. don't put neons on your car.. a RX-7 with neons is just not a RX-7.
Man .. you'll hondas following you around, trying to make friends with you :]
don't do it bro. put some polished valve stems caps instead. :}

mar3 03-25-02 01:06 PM

Don't over do it and neon is a good thing. It IS your car, after all...before you do that, though, FINISH YOUR FREAKIN' SUB-BOX PROJECT FIRST!!!. There's nothing worse than a guy having a dozen projects always starting a new one and never finishing any of them! STAY FOCUSED AND KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE!! That is all...:p:

Winnipeg85GSL 03-25-02 01:47 PM

I know a guy with a 10 inch under the dash by the feet and he's putting some under the seats. It actually is alright, but anything above the waist I dont much like.

hanman 03-25-02 02:26 PM

Anyone Think Neon Is "Ricey"?

Anyone think it's not?
hanman

RotorMotorDriver 03-25-02 04:52 PM

Ok...well that was fairly clear on the reaction :D. Also, I will be finishing my engine first, then the sub box, then the neon...Yes, I am still gonna do it, but I may not go with the street glow, but the 9" under the dash and the 9" in the amp box will be cool, maybe not the shifter either...

~T.J.

PS - I know what you mean about the hundreds of projects at once :(. I started pulling my engine today :)... But it turns out that im not gonna be able to use my block and tackle the way I wanted to. So I guess im gonna have to rent an engine hoist...

MIKE-P-28 03-25-02 06:42 PM

Nah I'll throw a pass to that :)
It think it looks stupid..

82transam 03-25-02 08:42 PM

I like neon as long as it's not overdone. I'm thinking about putting a few underbody lights on my rex (maybe) cash is gonna go to other shit first. :)

ziftar 03-25-02 09:04 PM

Pure Rice!

etherhuffer 03-25-02 10:01 PM

Dress up ain't speed. But its fun. I have thought about adding neon in red to my strut braces in the rear and connecting them to the brake lights. Without a third brake light SUV's tend to crawl up your rectum. Same for the license plate frames. They really add to your visibility in the rear. Unfortunately, more police visible as well.

Pittdp 03-25-02 11:22 PM

neon is very ricey and went out in the early 90's probley because the lights keeped breaking

nipplebandit45 03-26-02 01:16 AM

I like the idea of blue neon under the dah. I just gotta get a fw other thingstaken care of first....

Mke

V8kilr 03-26-02 01:25 AM

i like neons also if there done right,
but i wouldnt put them on the inside of my rex,
the outside bottom i would,
but i would also spend the money on go fast parts first,
which is why i dont own any and i get them extremely cheap.
will some day though.

85rx7blue 03-26-02 07:22 PM

Dont do it.

fortyoz2eric 03-26-02 07:31 PM

i guess i'll allow you to place them under the dash, seats and in the box but absolutely nothing else. NO neon shifter and especially nothing exterior.

TempusMori 03-26-02 11:34 PM

rice?

What does "rice" mean?

smnc 03-27-02 12:03 AM

Personaly I think all the ugly-ass neoen in NASTY RICEY SHIT... people around where I live are particularly fond of the nasty light-up winshield sprayers... I BEG you not to ugly up a beautiful FB with neon...

That said, if you're really sure you want it, do it. It may make me want to hurl, but it's your car, so you should do what you think is right. If neon is the thing for you, then go ahead, just realize that most of the rest of us consider it extremly ugly...

Rice is when people try to make their cars look "cool" or "fast" simply by embelishing the cosmetic aspects of it.

Really over-the-top body kits, blue headlights, neon, big-assed spoilers

Things like that...

Think like almost all the cars in "The Fast and the Furious"...

TempusMori 03-27-02 12:08 AM

but why rice

why do they use the term rice?

RotorMotorDriver 03-27-02 01:37 AM

Unfortunatly, as I understand it, it is a social stereotype. A vehicle is "ricey" or "rice" because the trend is common among Japanese made vehicals such as Hondas, Acuras, Mitsubishi, etc. The fact that they are Japanese is related to the Japaese culture and the rice growing/harvesting I guess. They are just called that due to the fact that their cars come from that reigon. Someone please correct me if im wrong...

82streetracer 03-27-02 10:03 AM

Man I have never heard the term "ricer" defined so efficienty. you should work for a dictionary company or something

Orange!FD 03-27-02 10:51 AM

The term is derived from the word "riceburner", which was the UAW's attempt at an epithet mocking Japanese-built cars, even as those cars were pounding away on the domestic automakers' market share. If they really had been able to burn rice instead of gasoline, of course, we'd have nothing but Japanese cars around here. :)

jrios 03-27-02 11:52 AM

I personally don't like the neon lights. I think it looks like a lamp on wheels. But then again, that is just my thought.

Pittdp 03-27-02 05:00 PM

you might as well put on a 4 inch exaust tip, dual colored wipers, and lighted washers.

Richard Miller 03-27-02 08:15 PM

I dont mind neon as long as you are at a car show. When your making a beer run leave the neon off. I have thought about the neon and I would only use it for actual show. The funny thing is that neon is not new to cars. I am not aware when it started but I have seen a few 50's cruisers that have neon.

RotorMotorDriver 03-27-02 08:57 PM

OK!!

Or not...

Woah, he needs to chill, I was just wondering what everyone else thought. If he feels it necessary to bash my questions and make me feel unwelcome, he can just not come here anymore :). I feel I have the same right he does to state my opinion and/or ask whatever I want.

Even though it's the wrong country, whenever I order Chineese food, I always run out of leftover food before I run outta the three boxes of rice they add to the order... Would be nice to be able to dump it in the gas tank and go.

REVHED 03-28-02 04:23 AM

Personally I would never put that shit on any car I own let alone the Seven but I have seen a few examples that are pretty cool.

My brother had a neon in his rear hatch hooked up so that it flashes in time with the beat from his sub-woofer. A friend of mine also had a blue strobe light that makes people think you're the cops :D and I saw a Honda (what else? :D ) one time that had a round neon tube inside each wheel. The neon was red and gave the effect that brakes were glowing hot. Pretty ingenius and it actually looked really good. Wonder how they actually ran the wiring?

riffraff 03-28-02 04:35 AM

if done right, almost anything can look good.. but it has to be done right, and not in excess...

but i for one an mot a fan of neon. i donot know if i would call that ricey (since i see that as more of doing body work or what not to make your car look fast when it is really slow as hell) i just donot think that it looks good.

RotorMotorDriver 03-28-02 06:43 AM

I plan on possibly doing this in the amp box, Target sells the thing that makes it strobe.

I have strobes I could put in my headlights that have the same effect (got em from a friend who drives an Acura, he didnt want them anymore). I also have my alarm hooked up so that I just need to push a button and the siren will go off as long as you hold the button (just did that for fun :)).

I did that on a Mitsubishi for a friend one time. I bought some neon disc brake rotor kits for a Honda Goldwing motorcycle and modified them. They sell them at the motorcycle accessory shops and stuff.

~T.J.

PS - For those who say that it has to be done right to look good, after I get some money and finish all my s**t, I'll take some pics of the neon, then you can tell me if you like it or hate it.

OtakuRX 03-28-02 07:14 AM

I like that look, and am thinking about putting 2 or so neons under my 83, if I do a body kit. Without a body kit I think it would be repulsive.

Sterling 03-28-02 07:14 AM

I think Neon is what they used to try to copy using clear tubes with little lights in them...kinda like movie theater runner lights. Only now I guess they're using the real thing.

I occassional see a van here and there with Cragers, extra wide whitewalls, Peterbuilt mudflaps, dual horn on the top...behind the cab lights of course, three sets of fog lamps, and...
Neon.

Neon is now a "ricemorphisis" of "Redneck trailertrash", but somehow only can be seen from that perspective if the driver of the 'neoned' car is a male between 16 and 25. (After 25, he should just damn well know better, and if he still likes neon, clearly he is retarded in some way!).

However, if the driver is a girl, then the neon is kinda cute...like the same kinda cute as polka-dotted nails.

Do what you wish -it's your car. But you asked!
I did not read this until I saw it had so many responces.
I am very disappointed at the lack of taste many of you members here have.
It's just a cryin' shame.

I'm especially disappointed in you, RotorMotorDriverNameTooGoddamnLong! I thought you did such a GREAT job on that speaker box. I would never have pegged you as the type to mess it all up with purdy lights!

(Please...Everything I say here is all in fun! I've always said, "To each his own...")

I might be interested in learning how this was done.
