any way to test cats?

Is there any way to test catilatic converters to see if they are clogged, when they are out of the car?

Thanks

yea, look through it. hehehe.

seriously though, when you look inside the cat, you should see the ceramic bricks. if you can see both from either side, it should be good.

Why?

First, technically it is illegal (for businesses) to sell used cats (although that is incredibly stupid).

There are primarily two ways cats fail:
1) they become clogged in which case the car starts running really poorly (if at all)
2) they rust out (if stainless, certain components rust out)

If they rust out, they won't pass visual, they are worthless. You can tell this by looking at them.

If the car ran decently when they were mounted, they are good.

Now, as to whether they are still efficient at reducing emissions...well, if you live in an area with emissions tests, you will find out soon enough, otherwise nobody but the enviroNAZIs will care...and they should worry more about the millions of cars in the 3rd world that don't have cats to begin with and quit picking on us.
