any 2nd gen parts good to use on 1st gen?

im planning on buyin a 1st gen rx7 soon. i have had 3 rx7s in the past but were all 2nd gens. i still have a 88 convertible parts car and was wondering what parts i could use off of it to make a 1st gen better like brakes, suspension, interior, etc.

thanks,
Ethan

There's a ton of parts you can use with some handiwork!

Simple thing is tear the fusebox out and replace your fusible links. (Guilty of being too lazy to do this to my car :sweatdrop)

I've seen some threads on using the radiator, oil cooler, ect. You could even use the engine out of that sucker! Probably in terms of suspension and stuff... the other guys might know better... But I remember a while ago reading a thread where a guy used FC hubs on his FB.

I know that you can use the engine, leading coil. You can also use the front brakes if you buy the Re-speed kit.

sweet. ill most likely be pullin the engine out of it soon to either sell or rebuild and put in a 1st gen.

Yeah, pull that 13B out and plop it in the FB. Also cosmetically you can use the strut covers from the FC on the FB, plus the seats will mount up too

If you want to keep your 12A, use the water pump of an FC it's aluminum instead of iron, so you'll lose a few pounds off the nose doing that.

All depends on how involved you want to get. There is a how-to on here about swapping over the entire front subframe from a fc onto a fb.

tranny if you make tranny mounts

On the S4 N/A transmissions you do not have to make mounts. You just swap the tail shaft housings and use the one from the FB on the FC. :)

This is good to know - I've got strut covers from an FC :)

Also, you can swap the alternator over too. The FB is a weak 50AMP, I just put a S5 FC 80amp on my car this past weekend. It takes a little rewire, but nothing major.

a thread i had from a bit ago. quick read through should give you some stuff you can take off as well.

The leading coil is worth it IMO. I read, with some strong skepticism, the "FC ignition mod" threads, did it, and... amazing. It starts easier, idles better, and feels like it's pulling harder at the top end.

That the stock FB alt is a joke. If you add audio amps it dims the headlights when the sub is pumping lol.

djessence 01-07-08 03:54 PM

^ that also happens on newer cars with high output alternators

im about to scrap the 2nd gen so what all parts should i save? i might strip it down all the way and it might go to the scrap yard as just a bare shell.

mikewoodkozar 01-07-08 05:55 PM

I would hold back on scrapping it until you are absolutely sure there is nothing else you need from it
