which antenna?

I want to replace my stupid electric antenna that broke a very long time ago, and is now bent, etc. I looked in VB and they have 2 options.

1) The universal rubber mast antenna
its the one thats only 16 inches tall and just black and pretty thick. I wanted to get this one until I asked my friend about them. He said he put one of those on hid 67 Mustang and said it was terrible. Do these work alright on our cars?

2) The manual extending antenna
I dont really want to put another huge antenna on because the stock one got wasted by a car wash. However, it is a little bit cheaper.

Anyone like their "universal rubber mast one"? Which one would give better reception.

Unsupa 04-26-04 02:05 PM

i have a manual one.. not sure if it's from VB, but i get good reception with it.. and you can always push it down when going into a car wash. :)

well i did until i tried rerouting my antenna wire and tore the plug off of it... :D

I put on an after market power antena and it workes fine, you just have to re-wire it because the wireing on the OE power antena is a little funny.

I have mine wired to the ignition switch because the wireing harness I have for my CD player does not have the power antena lead. I used a switch from radioshack to allow me to raise and lower my antena as i see fit as well. ie: goin through a car wash

As far as the reception is concerned that is more of a function of your reciver. If your reciver has a crappy radio signal reciver in it then you will get crappy reception...

Jinx099 04-26-04 02:32 PM

I'm using the stock reciever :(

I've heard good things about the rubber mast, but that might just be me. It has the added benefit of looking like an RC car.

Jinx, for about the same price as one of those rubber deals, you should be able to get a very good radio shack replacement power antennae that is easy to install using Jim Rothe's web page for instructions, with photos, under his Tips section. You can't get them from Radio Shack any more, but you can search ebay for Radio Shack power antenna, then make sure the Radio Shack Product number is 12-330. I got mine a few months ago for about $22, including shipping, from a vendor in California who said he had about a hundred of them left. They work great!

Universal Power antenna works fine. You can get one at an auto parts store for $60 or look for the Radio Shack version on eBay. I've got about 4 stockpiled that I paid about $15-$20 for on eBay. You do a little re-wiring, mainly to get an always-on lead. One of the guys posted excellent instructions, and when I get my Palm Pilot (where I load all the good RX-7 repair stuff) migrated over to this new T40 I'll re-post it.

Yeah, that RS power antenna works great.

Dude, I've seen your punch list of projects on the geezer post. In which decade do you plan to do the migration? :D Seriously, I'll be 42 this year and I'm looking at you as a model for what I plan to do. Slowing down is for sissies, right?

i couldn't find the right antenna on ebay, but the rubber mast one in VB is only $14.95, I think I'll just go ahead and order it.

Harada 5-piece black mast electric antenna running off Sony Headunit is how I normally go. I had one of those stubby, black rubber things and a fully extended electric one provides better reception. I have a dead Harada in Furious that I'm using temporarily until I get my stereo connection guy to get me a new one. It should be noted that the thin FG type work even better but you have to remember to unscrew it from the base before you do any mechanical car wash!

I love my rubber antenna :) Looks *awesome* on the car and the reception is just fine :) The tapedeck is what generally determines if your reception is really gonna suck.

I'll post a pic of the antenna tomorrow when I get around to finding my pic of it. Ah hell, here's a pic of the car with it, not the best pic, but it shows the antenna:

Yeah, I sold one of these to GlazedHam42 and he likes it. It's a radioshack rubber antenna, but they discontinued them so they're really hard to find. The US doesn't have them at all and they're tricky to find in Canada. I know where there are like four more. :) They're awesome

lol....at least his is straight...the one on my car was so old, it had bent from all the fast drivers. I threw it away, there's a ton of 'em down here in TX on all the ricers...

ray green 04-26-04 10:02 PM

OK I searched ebay and it looks like there's no more of the radio shack units left. But the one that is listed for multiple vehicles for 24.95 looks like a piece of shit compared to the RS one.

I've bought four of the RS units over the years, two from RS, the other two from ebay, all about $25 each, including shipping. I've recently one similar to the RS unit at Autozone and Advanced Auto stores for around $30.00, looks like it would install and work the same way as Jim Rothe's instructions. Or you could just get one of those rubber ducky things.

which of those antennas on antennax.com would you all recommend? The euro style, electric, or the "whip" one?

ray green 04-27-04 09:40 PM

Go for the rubber ducky, definately.

Ray

I personaly like the new "Euro" style antenna's. They might look pretty good attached to where the rear window sprayer is mounted.

Maybe the BMW "Shark-Fin" type..

Thats a Metra MX-22B :) Used to use them all the time, and no need to run wire (to the other guy not mar3) the wires you need are back there :) 10 minute job :D

Just use the "constant power" from the rear hatch light.

With the Sony headunit, the antenna goes down when you listen to a CD or use the cassette deck. It only goes up for radio play, so you can listen to something while the car is getting washed w/o the fear some cheerleader or high school kid's gonna bend the thing while they wash your car.

Sony and all Alpine's have 2 remote triggers, blue - ant and blue/wht remote on. I think some upper end Kenwoods also have this.
