Another Rats Nest has been Vanquished!!

Yesterday I finally finished removing the rats nest off my 83 fb. I have noticed so many improvements already. the idle and mixture are much easier to adjust now and the throttle response seems a bit snappier. My idle has also smoothed out completely and my little 12 a is purring like a kitten. I have only one problem that only started happening after i removed it however. Now my car is very hard to start it takes about 7-10 sec of cranking with my foot on the gas pedal before it finally turn over and coughs a HUGE cloud of smoke out of the exhaust. After I get it started it runs completely fine but this is concerning me. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Sounds like you removed some important part of the choke assembly.

I dont believe so. I went by Rx7carls walkthrough and double checked everything before I removed it. the choke works just fine its just taking a long time to start. I dont think the choke would really have anything to do with that honestly. If anything when I use the choke it starts a bit quicker

Also it happens whether the car is hot or cold and it never did this before i removed the rats nest so i dont think its the water seal. The AVS is plugged in. and when I shut off the car I checked the carb and gas isnt dribbling in after i shut it off. Im honestly stumped

I may have found the problem there is a crack in my carb spacer and there is fresh gas leaking out of it....its not a big leak but could this cause it?

Bingo... sounds like the gas is draining from at least one of your bowls so the pump has to fill them before it will start. Definitely get that fixed before you start it again as that is a major fire hazard.

It's not coming from the bowls actually it's coming from below the plastic spacer. I don't have enough money to get a new spacer so I put some high temp rtv on it and let it dry overnight and this morning it started right up. I know it's not a permanent fix but it should at least last me till I can buy a new one from Mazdatrix. But none of this will matter when I get my Holley carb kit :)

Don't waste your $$ on a Holley kit. I had one on my old FB and had lots of issues with it (the carb itself, not the kit).

im sure someone could mail you a carb spacer... i think i just threw one away and have another engine to tear down. If you ask, and no one has one closer to you, pm me and ill send it to you for $5.

Well what would you suggest besides the Holley? And a weber is out of the question because I live in Colorado and a choke is very necessary. And cshaw I sent you a pm
