You also have to invert the dialithium crystals:lol::lol::lol:

But seriously you do need to use the magnetic pickup

He is right...MSD's are as tough as nails. Only time I have seen problems if it gets too hot. Water damage on the ones with un-sealed openings.

Well I got the ignitor gutted out today. I found my soldering wire, but no soldering tools... I will run out later to get some and get it wired up and the back cover welded on.

Hyper4mance2k 04-20-09 08:23 PM

you shouldn't need ti welded back on. as long as you didn't slaughter the ignitor you should've been able to just snap the back cover back on.

Snap it back on? I cut it off.

Hyper4mance2k 04-21-09 03:28 AM

wow. I just used a flat head to scrap the adhesive around the edge and it pops apart.

Jeezus 04-21-09 08:32 PM

Fuck soldering. I am welding this thing tomorrow.

Hey Stu. If you want to bring me a good ignitor, I can take one of my spares and mod it for you. Then we can trade. Sound good?

Mmmm Laser Welder.

Finally got to run up to the lab and use it. Got the wires welded up and threw in some clear silicone to seal it from water and whatnot. Tomorrow I will throw it on and see how she goes :)

Alright guys, final update. Sam came by here to pick up some corner seals from Mazda and swung by. Got it wired up and she purrs so nicely! As far as driveability goes, she starts just a little itsy bit sooner and pulls a little harder as well. Actually I am not sure if it pulls harder, as I was driving the protege mostly and it... it isn't the fastest thing in the world :)

All in all, I would say go for the MSD if you have stock ignition and plan on doing more upgrades in the future (Crank wheel, 2 step, etc), but if you were just going for a little better ignition then go with the 2nd gen coilpack.

If the stock ignition was a 1 on the 1 through 10 scale, then the 2GDFIS would be a 9 and the MSD would be 9.5.

Just my two cents :)

Glad you got it running right! Did you use the tach output or get your tach hookup off a coil?

Jeezus 04-28-09 04:48 PM

Stock trailing tach.

Thanks for the props Stu. You guys get too excited over wiring stuff. It's not like I have been doing this for the past 12 years :D Glad that I could be of assistance.
