Aluminum Flywheel Question
 

I have a lite weight aluminum flywheel for a 215 mm clutch. When I measure from the pressure plate bolting surface to the friction surface I get 5/16 ths of an inch. When I measure from the same two surfaces on my GSL-SE 13B (with a 225 mm clutch) I get 12/16 ths of an inch, that is almost ½ and inch difference between the mounting surface and the friction surface between the two clutches. That seems to me to be an awful lot of difference.

 If you have a STOCK 215 mm flywheel would some one measure the difference between the friction surface and mounting surface and post that for me?

 If you have a lite weight aluminum 215 mm flywheel would some one measure the difference between the friction surface and mounting surface and post that for me?

 Has anyone used a 215 mm flywheel that has 5/16 ths difference between the two surfaces?

I know what you're talking about. RB made their steel and aluminum flywheels backwards compatible with 215mm disks and P-plates. To make a 225mm disk and plate fit, you've got to order their longer bolt and spacer kit. The spacers are like 10mm to 12mm taller I think, and the longer bolts account for this extra length. That's close to the 1/2" (13mm) like you mentioned.

Yes, I've worked on both steel and aluminum flywheels with 215mm and 225mm clutch disks and pressure plates. :)

So, I can use my 225 mm clutch on the 215 mm flywheel as long as I use the longer bolts, right?

I have herd about cutting flywheels mounting surfaces to decrease the distance between the two surfaces to pre-load the pressure plate, but isn't 1/2 " allot of "pre-load"?

So, Jeff if I get the longer bolt kit, does it come with some spacers, or do I just crank the pressure plate all the way down to the flywheel?

Uh... first of all, RB's light steel and aluminum flywheels work with both sizes of clutch disks (discs?), so I can't answer your first question very easily.

What do you mean a 215mm flywheel? Are you talking about a stock (heavy) flywheel? If so, then no you can't just crank it down and hope it'll work.

Maybe I'm not understanding your question. I'm curious why nobody else has chimed in yet. Hopefully somebody else will soon.

I think he's referring to the flywheel for 215mm clutch discs vs. the later flywheel for 225mm. Not sure of the year change though as I have only '80 and older rotaries that use the 215mm disc.

Oh, in that case, they changed in '83 to 225mm. The two sizes are not interchangable, although you could probably try it with Racing Beat's spacer and bolt set. Wouldn't that be weird?

I have a set of aluminum flywheel and you have to use a spacer. I will measure the spacer tomorrow and I will let you know.

the aluminum spacer is 1/4 inch thick.

I called Racing Beat and ordered a bolt package for $24 and it comes with the spacer to use the 225 mm clutch with a 215 mm flywheel.
