Alternator pulley install problem
 

So I went to install my RE Speed dual sheave pulley tonight. When I went to loosen the nut on the alternator it started spinning but I noticed it wasnt the nut spinning off the shaft but the whole shaft with the nut spinning out. The pulley remained stationary but I could see the stator inside the alternator spinning and the whole thing appeared to be unscrewing from the rest of the alternator. After I saw that I threaded it back the other way and it tightened back up against the pulley eventually and it appears to be operating normally on the ride home from my buddys house. Has anyone else ran into this problem before? I have swapped out plenty of alternator pulleys and I have never seen anything like this before, I cant figure out what the shaft would be screwing into inside the alternator. Any help is greatly appreciated.

never seen that happen...i just zip them off with the impact gun and all is well. do you think something in your alternator is faulty?

I just had my alternator apart the other day... the threaded shaft that the pulley nut goes on is not 'screwed into' anything - - it's a threaded section on the front of the rotor core. Leastwise, that's how mine is put together. There's nothing in there that can unscrew.

I'd suggest taking the alternator apart (undo the 4 screws and pull the front cover and rotor out) and locking the rotor in a vice with wood blocks for padding. That will make it very easy to get the pulley off.

When you go to put the thing back together, you use a straighted paperclip inserted in a special hole in the back cover & holes in the brushes to keep the carbon brushes retracted until the rotor and cover are all the way seated. Pretty simple. Detailed in the FSM.
