Alternative For Glasspacks/Presilencer
 

Its time to upgrade the 'ole exhaust and I've been digging around for different solutions. I noticed alot of you guys like to use glasspacks as presilencers (or mufflers), but of course hate the fact that they last only a short time.

After searching for some time, I came up across a few articles about '50s style "rodding". Apearently one of the only "performance" mufflers of the time were in fact steelpack mufflers. They share the same design of a glasspack, minus the glass :D . The steel packing of course is impervious to heat.

Another hour later and I've come up with one (so far) company that still makes a steelpack,Brockman Custom Parts . Its a '50s rodder site (imagine that) that makes all kinds of goodies for the rodder.

They sell them in pairs, any diameter (within reason I'm shure), and 5 different lengths. They do make them in glass or steel packed form. These are hand built and shurley are much better quality than the mass produced stuff like Thrush or Dynomax makes. The price is great also. Only about $5 more per muffler than other brands!

I did email them tonight to see if they will sell singles. I think I'm going to try em out and see what happens. The only catch is that steelpacks do sound different than glasspacks (or so I've read). So I really don't know what to expect.

Also, if anyone knows of any other manufacture that makes something like this, post please :D

Ive heard of people getting steel packed mufflers from Summit Racing.

Are they a glasspack style or a turbo style muffler?

I just saw a new product in the Summit catalog. All SS cherry bomb style muffler.

You know I must have search Summits site for 4 hours last night and didn't come across those.. But man that price tag hurts :eek: 100 bucks for one!

I understand the magna flow manapacks are ss packed in the 2 1/2 +inlet,outlet size. from their tech dept; they dont have room for the glass but the smaller sizes are glass packed. the dynomax are rated at 1500+ degrees. the ss wool packed ones are the best for our use. the lesser steel wool packed ones like above mentioned do burn/rust/rott out but will last longer than the standard cherry bom glass pack. you need to look at all the brands of glass pacs some are filled with cermics and have a much better heat rating and life for our use. the cermic ones sound the most like common glass packs.

I've used dynomax bullet ones, ceramic woll packing. Works great, but the smallest size is 2 1/2". :(

my local exhaust shop sells glasspacks, but when i asked if they would melt he said no, its more like woven steel than fiberglass, they are built to last forever.

he guranteed me they would not melt, and he is very familiar with how hot rotaries get. he's done my previous 2 exhausts, as well as a repu and an rx2 owned by my buddy here in WA.

get that warranty in writing. the 36" glasspacks im using melted within a week. besides, they are not that expensive. here in socal, i can get those for about $25 installed.

for those of you that may be interested i'm going to australia next week for a microtech seminar and will be doing some product research while i'm there. one of the products that i will be taking a serious look at is the complete line of Rotaflow Mufflers. The mufflers are turbo style straight through mufflers and come is several designs including a few re-packable steel packed mufflers. if you haven't guessed by the name already they are designed and built primarily for the rotary.

right now they are pretty much comparable to most of the higher quality japanese imported mufflers, a bit more than your standard apex`i N1 muffler. However, from what i have seen thus far, they are worth the extra few dollars, especially for their design an build qualities.

the availability of these systems is still a little hush-hush for the moment because i don't want to offer anything until i've seen it, heard it, and lived with it. i'm going to be taking pics and vids of just about everything i do over there so if you have anything anyone wants pics of let me know... oh, i'll be at the Jamboree `03 so you all tell me what you want to see from that as well.... as you know, australia is known for it's serious old school rotary action!

one last thing, if there are any products over there that anyone has interest in getting info on, again, let me know... i'll dig it all up and give you as honest an account of its quality and pricing as i can!


lastly, if the quality of the Rotaflow mufflers meets my stadards how would everyone feel about bolt-on systems for first gens? cat-backs? header back(to match the RB headers(dual and single) and a 3" turbo back for common 13B Turbo swaps with stock turbo? priced somewhere in the neighborhood of the old greddy power extreme cat-backs for the second gens? about 800 for a bolt-on cat-back and right around 950 for the complete exhaust after the headers.

carl I chose to use the dynomax bullets also on my t2 conversion. I am using 2 of the 3inch size the short one where the cat used to be and the longer one in front of the axel. I am a little conserned about the small one in front (packing melting) but have heard only good things from those that have used them. I have a friend that has installed the same basic set up on a 2nd gen t2 It sound great but it does not get used much so is not a good referance to the life span. how long have you been useing it with yours and how close is it located to your header?

I used a 2 1/2 right behind the header when I was running a short primary system. I used it for a year AutoX and Daily driving. It didnt burn up as far as I could tell. I still have it actually and it seems almost like new still (I throw nothing away LOL).

Old Rotary Enginering glasspacks seem to last forever. Too bad you can't get them anymore. I hope these new Rotaflow Mufflers are comparible in sound quality and longevity.

I'm anticipating they will be. At least i hope they will be. some of the mufflers are repackable which is something i REALLY love! I have some pictures i'll post here in a bit.

My 74 REPU has a RB dual outlet header and after that dual glasspacks side by side. I looked inside them and they don't look melted to me. Sound fine. They're at least 6 years old, probablly more like 10-15 by the looks of them. You can see them peeking out the rear of the cab on the picture below.

After an exhaustive search they look like Blue Streak Glasspacks. Each of mine are 40" LONG!!!
