Air conditioning.
 

It has not been working ( a while). I have an evaporator my dad bought. I am still gonna tryand figure out why my airconditioner would quit cooling.


It was cold when the AC was added (refridgerant), but it leaked out(I think), or tore up something...


Which one would it have done :wallbash:

Ok, got the car and it wasent working. We put R-134a into the system. It cooled like it was leaking.

It was cool, and then it was gone.


I dont have a 500$ machine like my stepdad to pick up leaks. he lives 5 hours away.

The auto parts stores sell refridgerant with the dye in it. You will need a uv light to find where it is coming out. If the leak is tiny, it can be hard to find. I'll wager the 500 buck one is a sniffer.

1st of all you can't just put R134a in the system. You needed to have the system evacuated.
If there was any R12 left over you just mixed refrigerents and that is a bad thing. If there was no R12 left then there is a special additive to make the oil in the system compatiable with R134a.

The best thing you can do is buy a R134a retro kit with o'rings. Then replace ALL the o'rings.
This means the ones at the compressor, at the receiver drier,condenser and where the tubes come thru the firewall from the evaporator core. After that then install your conversion oil from the kit. Recharge the system and see what happens. It is recommended that you replace the receiver drier also.

Was the compressor making any noise when it was turned on. Also did you make sure that the clutch was engaging after you recharged it? If there is any noise with the exception of the A/c clutch then there is a problem with the a/c.

What most people don't understand about A/C compressor is that the smallest amount of
foreign matter will destroy the compressor.

If it still does not retain freon then you will need to take it to a shop that has a R134a sniffer. Even with those because of the small molecules that R134a is made up of it is still
hard to find. Dye is even hard to trace especially if it is leaking inside the car at the evaporator core.

DO NOT USE THE GREEN O RINGS. They are crap.

There are horror stories about those rings and I have seen a set degrade in less then a year on a friends car.

refilled my 84 with r12 lasted aweek and leaked out checked all fittings wih leak detector except condenser Hard to get to. clutch worked fine when charged when filled. the compressor made some noise and was wondering about a rebuilt kit I now I can get an o ring set. Intertior gets unbearably hot,even had windows tinted and it helped a little. Will I be able to use old cluch and how ward to remove cluth and pulley?
