RUST ! ... the basis of a sound rally car is the straightest, most rot free shell you can find

anything else will most likely be sorted out in the process of prepping the car eg. suspension engine etc.

Always remove the storage bins and look for rust inside the unibody. If it's there, move on.

Other desirable things: all 1st gens with rear disc brakes also have a limited slip rearend and larger front brakes. These are GSL models.
The best 1st gen is the 84/85 GSL-SE model, biggest motor, biggest brakes, shortest gears, power steering, etc, but as they are getting rare please don't buy a mint one and roll it into the trees.

There's some other people here who rally their 7s, they'll have more specific tips and tricks for you. I might end up doing that to mine, if I win the lottery of something.

I don't think using a GSL-SE is a good way to go anyway. I wouldn't use any model with a sunroof, since they WILL weigh more. I'd find a GS or even an S, and swap in gsl-se suspension, that way you have the nice bigger brakes, better rear-end, a much wider selection for wheels, plus you have a lighter weight car. I would also stick with a 12a engine, they have a very nice potential for power. If you want to go with a 13b(slightly bigger) I would only get a 4port engine, since the 6port engines have very little room to make the ports bigger, so other than the basic mods, you can't increase the power too much(unless you use a turbo).
