Adding Ventilation
 

After removing the a/c, I am looking to add some more ventilation.

Seeing if anyone makes something that would latch into the rear hatch brackets and prop open the window 3-6". That way you can drive with the rear hatch open and secure.

If not, I will begin making one...

your gonna have to make one. i dont really think that would help all that much though. my regular cab pickup has a sliding glass window and with it open less air hits me. not sure about in an rx7 though lol

An open rear hatch on a 1st gen does nothing but suck in exhaust fumes, due to the vacuum pocket that develops at the rear. You'll end up gassing yourself.

Even a failing hatch seal can suck noticable amounts of exhaust into the car.

Good call on the fumes. I saw one on a Corvette at the last autox and it looked like a good idea....oh well.

I've found that taking the wind flap off for the sunroof helps, but only drive with the windows down if you remove that! if you take the sunroof off and leave the windows up, it creates a vacuum of sorts and about makes your ears explode while simultaneously destroying your car bolt by bolt. i swear it can steer your car also.

Well, that might be because Corvette owners are stupid :D

I'm sure there are other ways to get cool air in though. You could build a ducted sunroof with a little scoop on it to pull air down into the car directly on the driver, similar to a rally car setup. Or if you're not afraid of doing some cutting, you could make a duct to bring air from the vents in front of the windshield through the dash. Just some ideas.

These cars let a lot of fresh air in thru the vents already. The hatch idea is bad, you
will just end up being a darwin awards winner if you do that. Maybe you should put
the AC back in if you need to be cool.

dude what was the goal of removing the a/c?

What ever gains you got you going to lose due to the hatch area acting like a parachute

When I am cruising with the fellow rotories locally and want a little more to stay with the FC's or whatever .... I shut the a/c off

Vegas vs. Baltimore though. A/C just isn't worth it in these cars unless you live somewhere really hot, IMO.

While not all that stylish on a car, especially a 7, breeze windows are basically gods gift to trucks. I had an old 93 Ram and the breeze windows were far more comfortable than a wide open window and allow just as much cool air into the truck. Almost everyone I know that has driven an old truck with breeze windows wishes the new trucks came with them.

As for the original post, very bad idea to have the hatch propped open for the reasons stated above. It creates strange aerodynamic effects similar to what happens with a cowl induction hood. even though the opening is not facing the wind, air is still sucked into the opening by the swirling motion of the wind coming off the edge of the opening. In the case of a open hatch, this air also contains exhaust gasses. This is why the owners manual in a Jeep specifically states that the rear "hatch" window of a soft top should never be left open without removing the side soft windows or putting the whole top down.
