Abnormal Noise When RPMs Increase Rapidly - Any Ideas?
Hi! I'm new to the forum, and look forward to sharing stories and knowledge with the veterans ...
I have an 85 12A S, that's been in storage and recently restored to road worthiness; only 92K mi. Recently, I've noticed an abnormal whirring noise when the engine's raced (with and without the clutch depressed) and the RPM's increase quickly. This noise comes and goes, usually with the engine running a while; doesn't affect driveability ... yet(?) ... Any ideas or thoughts as to the cause and fix? |
does it vibrate the car or make it jutter?
|
slipping belts?
|
DRJ419 - no, the car doesn't vibrate or shake when the noise is present ...
CDRAD51 - the belts were checked and from initial inspection looked within spec ... any other suggestions as to where to look? Thx! |
Could be the alternator. Those usually sound sort of like turbo-whine to me.
Perhaps the clutch on the AC compressor is on its way out? |
Probably fan clutch.

I have a similar noise, but I just swapped in another engine. I think it is in the clutch area for me (throughout bearing or pilot bearing). Maybe you have a similar problem.

I spoke to the folks at Racing Beat, and they suggested first checking the lube in the drive-line, differential.
Since the noise comes on occasionally, and after the car's been running awhile, they suspect it to be gear noise due to 'thinning' of viscosity in the lube. Suggested using a synthetic 75-90W in the differential. I'll also look at the fan clutch and the throwout / pilot bearing if the easy fix doesn't work... Thanks for your suggestions! More welcomed ... |

oooh... my car does this too. I thought it was something wrong with the tranny (rear seal is going out). Hopefully it is just my fan, I want to get rid of it anyway, it is really loud.

If it's the Fan Clutch, how can I fix it ... would the Fan Clutch need to be replaced? ...

How many quarts go into the rear LSD?

Best fix for the fan clutch ? get an electric fan off a -correct me if I'm wrong guys - Ford Taurus SX somthing .... look into it .. it's the bigest model of the taurus ... fan almost fits right in and it's small enough to go in there .. ohh and there's a little power increase involved ;););)

1st Advice. Never go back to Mazdas and More. If you need good shops PM me and I will steer you the right direction, with lists of Mechanics in your area.

Funny you should mention it. I just finished performing extensive work on my car - new radiator, water pump, fan clutch, intake water jacket seals, metering oil pump rebuild, oil cooler seals, hoses, thermostat, oil pan gasket, etc. Now, I am hearing a loud whirring noise under the hood. It sounds like it is coming from the fan. I put the old fan clutch back in because it turns out the radiator was the overheating culprit. Anyway, the whirring/ whining sound persists - maybe a little quieter with the old fan clutch than with the new. Otherwise, the car is running great. This noise is a bit annoying. Maybe I just never noticed it before. Could it have something to do with the choke adjustment?
