88 guage cluster into 82?

hey i was searching thru one of the local junkyards and i came across an 88 rx7....the car's body looked beaten up but other then that the rest was in good condition....i was wondering if i could take out its gauge cluster and put it into my 82....or just the speedo b/c my speedo only goes to 85 and i know its a lot faster then that......thanks a lot

parker

also if anyone is looking for parts i can possible grab them from this 7....it has the engine and tranny also....

If you just want a faster speedo, the 83 speedo will drop right in and reads to about 120?The 85mph speedo was just for a year or two while a certain law was in effect.

The 88 gauges will probably work.Speedo and tach arent really different mechanically, and the electric sending units for the 88's ancillary gauges can be installed in your engine. The hard part would be cutting and mounting to get the cluster into the dash recess, and having it look clean.

I think that it would be quite a bit of work to adapt an 88 cluster into your 82. I think your best bet would be to get a cluster out of an 83. I believe that they go up to 130 mph and would be a direct bolt on, both physically and electrically.

If you do swap clusters make sure that you record the odometer reading of both clusters when you do the swap (maybe a pic of each one with the date somewhere in the pic). That way you will always know the actual mileage on the car and may be needed if you ever descide to sell the car.

with the odometer reading i can actually roll back the readings on the 88 gauge to the numbers that are on my 82....its not difficult.....another thing is that im not going to hook up all the warning lights and what not b/c i dont need a light to tell me that im low on gas.....

another thing is that i dont really think that the two dashes are any different in size....they both look really similar...maybe ill take a better look at it...but im not sure if the sending unit for the speedo will actually work with the 82 connections...and so forth....thanks

You may not need a low fuel light, but the first time you aren't watching your temp guage and the hot engine or low coolant light could have saved you, don't come crying about your toasted engine. Don't mean to sound harsh, but they have a purpose.

Besides, I thought Marines were by the book.

I have a '86 FC speedo in my car, and it's a freakin' job to get it in. It's still not 100% as the tripmeter doesn't work yet (the oddo does, but the reset-rod from the trip meter somehow got stuck in the "reset" position). The reset-rod is on the other side btw.
You need to modify the cluster itself to accept the speedo etc. Not really worth the effort, but hey, I just had some extra time ;) And my speedo went beyond the last markings (210 km/h)

so an 83 speedo with 130 on it will bolt directly into an 82 with the 85 on it....
(wow numbers)

^^^I need to get an 83 speedo ....i hate that my speedo (on my 82 GS) only reads 85 when i know she goes faster than that! Anyone have an extra one lying around they want to sell???

kuhlrx7 10-26-04 07:29 PM

take alook at mine. https://www.rx7club.com/forum/attach...postid=1691638

nopiston_racer 10-27-04 02:47 AM

hey kuhlrx7 how did u go about installing that dash....if i can figure it all out i will install the 88 into mine....another thing is yes i understand that the warning lights have a purpose...but right now there not a key factor as they can be moved anywhere.....as a marine i've been trained in electronics so if i would have to do some soldering and reconnecting of circuits it wouldnt be that difficult.....i really need a new dash tho b/c i cant stand mine....thx parker

Same here I have a 81 GS and I hate having the 85Mph speedo on mine. I would like to upgrade that sucker to a better one. What years Rx7 and models dose the dash fit into my 81 and if is hard is ok just want to know if which one and the pro and cons of it.

Thanks In advance!
