85 RX7 worth it?

okay im in a bind. i can get ahold of my friends 85 rx7 for REALLY cheap, im talkin 375.00 cheap. lol, there's a catch tho, the car was recently broken into, and it has no ignition, and locks. it's also an automatic. but there are some good stuff about the car too, it's got new back tires, and new tabs, and runs really good. i was wondering if you guys think it's worth it, and how much it'll cost to get those bad things fixed? if you guys could tell me about the hp in a 85 i'd like that too. im looking forward to joining the mazda community, and i hope you all welcome me! :bigthumb:

how do you know it runs if it has no ignition? is it completely gone from the battery, coils and plugs or do you mean just the switch? just curious... also a 1985 model has no more horsepower than any other, they have about 80 to the wheels if it's a 12A, and less than that if it's old and beat up. As long as it has a clean title and you know for sure it runs and so forth go for it...

80hp? dang, how do you guys deal with that kinda horsepower? haha, no jus the ignition switch, like you could start it with a screwdriver. how much do you think it would cost to change the tranny from auto to stick?

Yo, High...

Welcome , Go post in the NW section....

I'm In Bellevue, WA

Easy switch to a Manual Tranny, no problem, About your ignition, you coudl set it up for a push button start if you really wanted to, or you can just go to a scrap yard and get a new locks/ignition for like $50.00 that is what I had to do, with the asshats that broke into mine and tried to steal it.

BUY IT!

And as far as "dealing" with the 80hp...its not 80hp...its prolly 80hp if its an old beat up engine...but they came with 105hp from the factory if i remember correcly. This number does not do the car justice...since the power a rotary engine makes can carry through such a broad range of RPMs. Plus, rotary engines are very light in comparison to a piston engine. I suggest that you go for a drive in a 7 if you think that you are gonna have trouble "dealing" with the horsepower.

haha, thanks bkm. that really lifted my spirits, i had some problem thinking about 80hp but it makes sense that it would be lighter, what do these engines usually redline at?

Its strange isnt it, theres nothing like driving a rotary car... Even if its 80hp it sure as hell is alot of fun, in a light sporty package. My 12a redlines at 7000rpms but can handle higher with a better oil pump, the stock oil pump cant handle higher rpms.

If the 85 is a GLS-SE it has more horsepower.. It would have a 13B producing 135 BHP.
