85 gsl-se racing beat holley problem
 

so it seems like i have a leak at the fuel pump but um no idea how to take care of this problem all help is appreciated

u say "it seems i have a leak", have u even looked to confirm that there is actually a leak? if it's just leaking at one of the fuel lines, either try tightening the clamp or replace the hose. if the pump itself is leaking, replace it. and how is this a racing beat holley problem?

sorry my form of talking is remedial. i do have a leak a puddle of gas collects between my intake manifold and the engine coming from the holley and because the holey itself is from racing beat im a newbie so im not sure how to categorize problems when i come across them

its leaking from the bottom of the Float Bowl

if im understanding you right, i would check to make sure the 4 screws on the pump (on the bottom of the bowl) are snug, also the 4 bowl screws. other than that just let the car run and watch it to see where it is dripping form it could be the gasket is bad in which it would did replacing and depending on how old the carb is i would just get a kit and replace all the gaskets.

thanks i tried everything you suggested and snapped a bolt in the process lol i ordered the racing beat float bowl along with the fuel lines if that dosent work just gonna get a kit

i highly dought the bowl is the problem unless its been dropped or something. yeah that sucks you broke a bolt off you NEVER want to over tighten anything you just snug the bolts up in an x form like you would the lug nuts on a car. I still say its probally the gasket.

i just noticed its not the racing beat holey that they offer in the site its a cheaper one with less specs so i might just end up buying a whole new holey

If your car is running correctly now I wouldn't do that. A cheap new one won't be set up for your engine.

I would guess that you just need new gaskets for the float bowls and the float adjustment holes. The stock paper gaskets are single use. They have glue on them and tear when taken appart. I liked using rubber reusable bowl gaskets. Obviously you will need to replace the bolt you broke too.

i was planning on buying a 1406 elderblock 600 cfm is that not a wise route? and i ordered racing float bowls from racing beat would that fix this problem or would i still have to replace all the seals etc?

from my experience with muscle cars using a elderbrock carb sucks for any kind of true performance the holley is a much better way to go. if you get the blue non stick bowl and metering plate gasket (the block between the bowl and main body) and a new bowl pump gasket (its a black square with a metal piece the size of a nickle made onto it) and retighten it in a x patteren im sure it will fix your leak. and it should only cost about 20 bucks at any advance or orillye auto parts. also unless you know how to adjust the float to get it were it should be you should leave it alone, there is probally nothing wrong with it anyway plus either way you are going to have to get new gaskets

it was the bowl pump gasket thanks project 7s pulled the holley gonna rebuild it seems like all the gaskets need to replaced for now i put a 1406 elderblock

Though Edelbrock/Carter's won't leak they have plenty of their own issues that I think are worse than the Holleys. Due to the rotary's intake manifold orientation the carb has to be mounted sideways. Mounting the Carter sideways reveals shortcomings in the float bowl design. The car will die when you turn left due to fuel uncovering the primary jets. This is not an issue on V8 cars that can run the carb in the correct orientation. Another issue is the metering rods will oval out the primary jets making the car gradually run richer until the metering rods break and drop in the bore of the primary jets.

im not liking the sound of this. but im not running the 1406 for long my rx is my daily driver to work etc im just leaving it on for a month or less until i rebuild the holley

im used to advance thats why i use them but they should have or at lest be able to get you a kit for it. you will need to write down the list number on the front side of the carb on top, where the choke flap would be (ex. 4779-4) to make sure you get the right kit as there are different ones. its pretty simple to rebuild a holley, plus you already know it runs good i would just get a kit and 2-3 cans of the store brand carb cleaner and a free day. just remember tighten the parts in a x patteren and tighten it pretty snug NOT gorilla tight or it will break or strip out. good luck.

thanks guys saved me a whole bunch of hassle and trouble btw 13bt would it be safe just to cruise in the gsl se with the 1406 for a month or so until i get the rebuild done or am i better off just parking it until then

Carter will most likely be very rich without jetting it. Jet it and it will work fine for a few months until it breaks a metering rod and ovals the jets.

The better choice is to simple replace the bowl and block gaskets on the Holley. It's a really quick job once you clean the old gasket material off everything.
