85 GSL SE Instrument Panel Lights Not Working
Hello,
I am trying to get my dash lights working on this car I just bought for my son. I see that there is a panel just to the left of the steering wheel where it looks like there used to be a switch. It's just an empty knockout now, with evidence of overheating. I am wondering if perhaps that was the dimmer switch for the instrument panel lights and since it;s gone, that is why the panel lights don't work. Can anyone tell me what was in that panel location? I have the Chilton's manual, but no owner's manual. I am also trying to figure out what the joystick on the center console is supposed to do. All tips are greatly appreciated! Thanks - John |
The dimmer switch is a roller, next to the power mirror switch. Sounds like your's is gone. The joy stick is a 4-way speaker balance.
Welcome to the forum. In my sig line is a link to the online FSMs. |
the dimmer switch needs to be hooked up for the lights to work

Dimmer switches can be bypassed; although, your dash lights will obviously be full on bright. That's not a big deal as at least you'll have nice bright dash lights! I had a local auto-electric specialist diagnose my dash lights as I failed to trace the fault. He found my dash light problem to be a faulty dimmer switch without a good ground.

Here is a dash pic of my GSL. Hope this helps

Lower to the left of the steering colum from left to right is the power mirror switch, rehostat for the dash lights, choke (only on carburated 12A's) and I have an accessory switch for my driving lights. |
Dimmer switch
Does anyone know where I can find a dimmer switch for my gsl se? thanks in advance
