85 GSL 12 A donor to Mod Car Build-up Help Needed near free parts

Totally new to rotary. Found an 1985 12A 5 spd with limited slip dif to power a lotus seven style mod car (to be used for track days and autoX).

I thought the rotary was simple, but find myself lost in a maze of electronics and tubes. Please help.

1. How to trim down to a simple Carb and Header design, with no emissions and simple wiring design.
2. How to retain or oil metering, vs mixing.
3. What's up with the 2 sparkers per rotor and 2 coils

All suggestions welcome. If anyone in Ft Walton wants soem bodypanels, hood, glass, sunroof, 14" 1985 13B wheels or standard 13" 4 spokers let me know. You can have for nearly free, or take all for free after I remove drivetrain. Interior lost to water damage. Seats O.K. Lookign for room in garage.

awww, man! why couldn't you have all this cheap stuff when i lived in p'cola! the rotary is pretty easy, you just have to know what to get rid of. first off, lose the airpump, it's the belt driven thingy on the right side of the engine. lose the hoses that come off of it. most vacuum lines can be lost as well, just plug the holes where they come out of the carb. the only vac lines to keep will go to the distributor(vacuum advance). shoot, it's been awhile... somewhere in these posts are very detailed instructions for removing all that stuff, either that or one of the fellow rotarites will have a link.
as far as oil metering goes, there is a linkage coming off the front of the carb that goes to your metering pump. make sure it is connected, and the two small diameter plastic clear tubes should be connected as well.*hint* get a hayes manual. they're cheap and have a decent amount of good advice.
the 2 spark plugs per rotor are for leading and trailing fire. as the rotor makes a revolution, the lead plug(bottom one i think) fires, then the trailing fires right behind it to burn off any leftover fuel. the 2 coils are for each system: one for lead, one for trail.
**another good hint*** look up felix's FAQ's on the rotaries(anyone know the link?) i found it by searching google. it's got a TON of good info for any rotary enthusiast. good luck on that 12a! and if i ever get vacation time back to FL and you've got parts, i'll be happy to take 'em off your hands! :D

hey could you grab the passenger side wiring harness out for me? i will give you $$:D comes out of the firewall and hooks up with all the emmisions and alternator

Bonjo 07-25-01 10:46 PM

Thanks... Weber vs edelbrok or Holley

Great info on the FAQ. I removed just about everything and marked all the wires and vac hosed iaw the Chiltons book (9.95 at pep boys). I think I'm going to Modify an older intake manifold ito accept a simpler carb, or drop the intake in favor of a Downdraft of side-draft weber setup.

Any Advice?

As far as the harness goes, it appears that it won't be usable for my application due so many leads for emmisions and every given accessory. I will try and usilize it.

However, I'd prefer a simple wiring plan only listing the essentials for a GoKart like car. I can add a sub-harness at a later date for stuff like lights and signals. Right now I'm only concerned with a simple gauge pack, starter and ignition.

Hey, are the standard 4 spoke rims the chrome ones? If so how much would you part witht them for?

rotorhead 07-26-01 10:49 AM

chilton!? yuck! go with a haynes manual. chilton's will generally have you more confused about the car than before you had the book. i've had good results with the delorto 48 dhla sidedraft carb. easy to tune, easy to install, and reliable as could be. the only problem could be finding parts. cb performance carries a lot of stuff from them, and there's a place in UK that stocks ALL dellorto parts. sales@dellorto.co.uk you may be able to find one used and cheap on parts trader..... waitaminute... i think badassrx-7 is selling his! hmmmmm..... also, weber sidedrafts are very similar, so i would assume they work just as well. if you go the dellorto route and have any questions, just let me know. btw, my 12a with the dellorto has one vacuum hose... the brake assist. simple, eh?

I have 12A header for a Lotus 7

Hey Bonjo,
did you say Lotus 7 style car? Caterham 7 perhaps?

I have an early style 12A (twin distrib) that came out of a real Lotus 7. You may not be interested in the engine, but I have the custom header that was made to fit the 12A into the Lotus. The Lotus used a side pipe. Both exhausts are collected into one. Can't garauntee that it's a perfect fit, but it would be at least good to start from.

If you are interested let me know, and I could send you some pics of the header. I'll sell it to you cheap +shipping.

As for the wire harness, start with the one you have on the car and get out the pruning shears. I did that to a harness, took a little time, but once you get down to just what you need, it is amazingly simple. Plus it is a great learning experience. Just have the Haynes manual in front of you while you are doing it. If your car is running, that's a great way to check to see if what you just cut off is going to cause a problem. Why mess with creating a new harness when you have one that works right in front of you?

BTW - I'm installing a GSLSE 13B into a '65 MG Midget. Looks like I'm going to try to keep the Fuel injection, if I can manage it.

Sounds like it might work

Send a pic of header, or post an image to board.

I'm doing a Locost, Westfield, Caterham, Junkyard Dog Mix Match. I'm working on a $6000 budget, then maybe another 3-5 in upgrades over time. Shooting for 1000lbs and 150hp. Registered in FL with no windscreen as a DunBuggy or Unknown. Fl is pretty open.

I was planning a 2 tube out nearly the full length, to a 2 in 1 out muffler. If too loud than add a spark arrestor or Suppertrapp.

My email is Bonjo2@earthlink.net

Looking for side-draft carb and intake combo for 1985 12 A, and Long tube header.

I took some pic this weekend, I'll send them directly to your e-mail.

Based on what I can gather from the Racing Beat catalog, it looks like the exhaust flange on the header won't fit the later 12As. I don't know what exactly is different, but the flanges that they have for sale use '74 as a cut-off for 12As. The was off a twin distributor which I believe stop production in '73.

Drool.......
150hp and 1000 lbs - :D I want one...
I want a Lotus 7 before I die:blue:

Like Rotary-MG, I also have a 13B powered Midget. Mine uses the Racing Beat intake mated to a Weber 45 DCOE carb. It is running better after a lot of jet swapping. Very simple and compact (low hood height) setup with minimum amout of complexity.

The wireing harness is pretty simple to make. Just follow the Haynes manual. I didn't have a doaner car so I had to make mine from scratch, but since you have a Mazda harness you might as well use what you can from it.

Have fun and keep us posted!!
