85 GS only starts/runs when gas is dumped in carb
 

So I haven't owned an FB since way back in the day, but I picked one up towards the end of the summer and am getting back into, but just as a DD. The car has started and ran great until the morning I go out to go to work and the car wont start and my TurboII is disassembled in the garage.

After reassembling the TII to be my daily for the moment, I found out that the FB will start and run all day long as long as you start it by dumping some gas down the carb and will restart fine if started within a couple hours, otherwise more fuel in the carb.

Without starting by putting fuel in the carb, it just kills batteries trying to start.

Anything that could have happened within the 24 hours between parking and then this situation that could have occurred causing this. I don't think its the cold because I moved it into my garage that I heated up to approximately 50 degrees, and no go still.

Or something needs adjusting on the carb, I know I'm pretty much a noob at carbed rotaries after forgetting they exist in the last 5 years don't take that heart guys an 85 GSL was my first car I bought when I was 14 and there is always a special place in my heart for them, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Pull off the fuel hose from the carb and put it in the cup. Turn the car on (don't start) then turn it off to see if the fuel pump is working first.

Wouldnt it have to be working to be running. Ive had it running for the last twenty minutes just had to start it with gas in the carb. ill check though.

yup got fuel from pump.

Have you tried simply pumping the gas pedal a few times before trying to start it? Should be the same effect...

Also, before trying to start it, see if you have fuel in the float bowls....

Yea thats what I thought as well but for some reason I can pump all I want it seems very little fuel is being pumped in before startup, although when i pulled the fuel line plenty of fuel was flowing.

I will check the float bowls when I get of work tonight,

The accelerator pump is supposed to provide a healthy squirt of fuel whenever the pedal is depressed. Look down into the primary (smaller) barrels of the carb while you have someone push the gas pedal to the floor (or operate the linkage by hand). If you see just a weak dribble, then your AP is shot. This would be fixed with a carb rebuild kit....

Thanks a ton, ill get on that after work and report back, if thats the case ill have it rebuilt or look into the sterling carbs or maybe some side drafts.

I had this EXACT same issue and I couldn't figure it out for the life of me.... Until I dropped my tank.

I checked the flex lines that connect to the carb for blockage and leaks and that was fine, the rigid line to the pump and that was fine... Pump flow tested OK...

At the filter, I stuck a segment of fuel line into a gas-can and it fired right up and ran fine... But it wouldn't when I hooked it back up to the tank supply.

To make a long story short: The fuel hoses that connect the tank to the rigid tubing were cracked and admitting air instead of sucking up gas.
