85 California model auto trans shifts into O/D w/o it activated

I was messing with a 2.5a relay hooked up between 3 wires near the steering column by the firewall not sure what it did but when I plugged it back in and went for a drive my trans practically skipped 3rd and went strait into overdrive when the button wasn't even turned on, I've since unplugged it again and it still does this as well as checked all the wired hooked up to the button and the trans as well as searched everywhere but the most I can see I people having the opposite problem on 2nd and 3rd gens... I really have no clue what to do. Any help would be much appreciated

Automatics are extremely rare in a first gen RX-7. And not in a good way. I have an auto 1985 GSL I converted to manual.

You might want to figure out what circuit that relay is on and what it's function is and what else could be wrong in that circuit that might effect the trans. Without knowing specifics of that circuit is it's hard to troubleshoot over the internet.

If you find out you need an auto trans I have a low mile one with a few other items left over.

So, it shifted ok before messing with this 2.5a relay? If so, can you source a new relay to try? Normally, shifting on an auto is controlled by the modulator valve, which is vacuum operated.
