85 13b is a 1st gen special edition (GSL-SE)

The 86-91 are the second generation RX-7s

differences are

Larger a/f meter, throttle body, and intake ports on the engine. smaller injectors. running a different computer, and wiring.

Also it has 2mm apex seals. where as the 84-85 has 3mm seals.

84-85 13b produced slightly less power but it is a longer lasting engine, and more reliable.

Buckaroo....

Haynes puts out a fairly decent manual, and it has a section covering 13B stuff. Otherwise get a "factory" shop manual available either from your local ignorant Mazda dealer, or Mazdatrix....
As I understand it, the wiring harness is much different on the 2nd gens from the 1st gens....It sure is on our '87 2nd gen parts car....

Denny, from the 'ol corncrib....:D

Thank you for the info. Here is the situation... I bought an 85 SE, got a new engine, and turbo as a package deal. I need to know how to tell the difference between an 85 and 86 engine. Would I be better off buying the Hayes 86 manual because I have the 85 manual, but it doesn't cover enough infor on the 13b. thanks again. Yadda, yadda, yadda...
