85 12A Died on the way home
 

I have an 85 GS with a 12A in immaculate condition with 96,000 miles. It runs perfect,.. well it did. On the way home from work today it just completely died. No sputter or anything. I tried to start it but it didn't even try to fire. I guess the first logical thing to do is check for spark and then fuel after that. Is there anything I should be looking for? Any common problems that I may have encountered? Fuel pump maybe? Thanks for any help.

Check fuel bowl sight glasses to see if there's fuel in the bowls. If yes, not the fuel pump.

Make sure you're not out of gas.

Check fuses and fuse links.

Make sure your dizzy rotor hasn't come off inside the cap.

Check for spark.

Check engine ground points.


A sudden fail like that is usually ignition/electrical. Unless you lost fuel feed.

to elaborate slightly on what DivinDriver said, if you see no fuel in the carb, and do not hear the pump running, you may also want to look at the fuel pump relay as a possible issue. test for power to the pump when cranking. all you need to do to do this is pull the driver's side bin, hook your multimeter leads into the two pin connector for the fuel pump and crank the engine. you shoudl see 12V or close to that when cranking.

if you see 12V when cranking and the pump is not running then you have a bad fuel pump.

Just out of curiousity, if the pump only gets power when cranking on a 1984/85 12A, how does the pump run when not cranking?

Cranking OR running; it's driven by an ignition signal from one ignitor, IIRC.

SA's don't have fuel pump relays, so I forgot about that part. :blush:

Thanks for the replys. I did pull the cap and rotor and it was all intact. I finally have some time this weekend to look at it more thoroughly.

I pulled the plugs and there was plenty of spark. So I poured some gas into the carb and she fired right up. I then checked the fuel pump and it was dead. I ordered an new one and it should be in next week. Thanks for all your help.:nod:
