84 U Joint- Replaceable?
Alright, before anyone freaks out, I did a search for this but got mixed results. I'd like to know if the front Universal Joint on my '84 GS (Manual transmission) can be replaced. In assembly, it doesn't appear to be any different than most U Joints, so I don't understand why it couldn't be replaced. My current joint is *&%$ed. The rear joint, however, is a different story. It's even worse, but it doesn't look like it can be removed. What's the story? As always, thanks. -A

no they arent. my got f'ed up so i had to get a new driveshaft. it sucked, but its all good. mazdatrix sells new ones with replaceable u-joints, but they arent cheap. check around for machine shops or places that do driveshafts for semi's. supposidly theres one around here that will do anything with driveshafts, like make nonreplaceable u-joints, replacable. i would just get one out of a junkyard, it was $15

yeah they supposidly non replaceable, but thats a lie, it only seems that way.

Why would I have to take the driveshaft to a shop to have them change the joints? Considering I was going to have to replace it anyway, I already took the front joint out and it looks like it's only a matter of finding the right size joint. Is that joint nonexistent, and people have to take it to a shop to have them machine the shafts or something? I guess I just don't understand why it's such a project. I have to go up to work tonight to go to a meeting, so while I'm there I'll look and see if I can find a joint. If I can, then I'll worry about the rear one. I'll let you guys know what I find out. -A

I've replaced mine, but I had a '82 driveshaft and flange on my '84 GSL-SE. From my understanding the driveshafts that have the bigger flange are the one's that are trouble. You may have an early model flange if your not having problems taking out the U-joints

go to the yard and pick one up... and its probably better doing it this way... you'll just end up running around to find the answer to your question when you can just get another one for cheap....

This guy had them replaced but there is no detail on how it was done.

I had it done localy at a driveline place, they used solid u joints, and they worked for , well up untill I did the POS cosmo transplant, so yes they work, actually the person I gave the old driveshaft to is still using it :)
