84-85 power steering boxes VARIABLE PRESSURE?

My Dad is doing a project using a 1st gen power steering box, and we were curious about the "control valve" mounted on the pump. It seems these boxes are capable of changing the pressures (steering effort and feel). I thought only later 2nd and 3rd gen steering systems were variable, can anyone shed some light on this?

1st gen Power steering is speed dependent. More details can be found in the 85 service bulletin and 85 FSM.

It has a processor that is attached to the clutch/brake pedal assembly.

Thanks for the link to the 85 FSM, good stuff! I suppose bypassing this valve would cause the pump to produce max pressure at all times?
