83 tranny into a 79?
 

There is a 83 5 speed I could by to put into my 79 to replace the 4 speed but could I still use my 79 driveshaft or would I have to swap it out?

I think the driveshaft is to short in the 79 for an 83 tranny (I could be wrong) Also, if I am not mistaken the shiter is in a different location and you will have to cut the structure and try to fabricate a new console to fit

as for the shifter.. I think just the shifter it's self is different as it's not angled as much as in the 79-80... but I'm not positive.. anyone that has done the swap.. info would be great

81-85 had a remote gear box. you will need to do some slight cutting in the tranny tunnel, but i donot think that it is much (i am hoping to that swap soon).... all drive shafts from 79-83 should have the same end, so you should be able to use the 83 driveshaft without troubles...

Its about 1 1/2 inches you have to trim back, and when I did mine, I had to change the entire metal sub dash to get the newer console and shifter plastic piece to match :(

The driveshaft will work, though! :) All '74-up N/A transmissions are the same length, same input spline, same output spline.

But like Mike said, you have to hack up your floor and dashboard to make it fit, because of the remote shifter that puts the shift lever's pivot in an awkward place and makes the shifter feel like flipping a light switch (flop flop flop) instead of a nice shifter motion like the '79-80 had. (But we have FIXES for THAT... :evilgrin: )
