83 gs 82 gsl rear
 

i have a few swap questions. I have an 83 gs car with the drum brakes. Im going later to buy an 82 gsl rear end for $100 complete less the sway bar and watts link. What do i need to make the swap? I know I need a new e brake cable, but what about a prop valve? are the wheel bearings and stuff the same? sorry for all the questions

wheel bearings are the same if the 83 you have is a small bearing (most likely is). The axles will be the same as well. Backing plates and mounting plates for the axles will not be the same between the two.

ok good, the rear i have has brand new wheel bearings and seals in it, the lsd rear i got has been sitting under a tarp for three years... what all should i do to it before it goes in? I was going to replace all the bushings, wheel bearings, and rebuild the calipers. Change fluids and give it a good cleaning up and paint. Any other things to do?

Actually there are some variations in the 83 model year. Some of the 83's came with small flange drive shafts found on pre 82 rx7s and some came with large flange drive shafts found in the later 84-85. So if the driveshaft is available I would compare it to the one on your car before leaving with out it.

Check your pinion flange, where the driveshaft bolts on. Bolts threaded into the flange = small flange. Bolts with nuts on the backside = large flange.
According to the parts books, the 81/82 GSL used the same proportioning valve as the drum brake models. That seems to have changed in 83. Disc brakes got a different prop valve, while drum continued to use the same as the older cars. Could be a misprint, I don't know. I never changed the prop valve under my 83 GS when I installed the GSL rearend, been working fine for 3 years.

one more question, how much fluid does the diff hold?

If you still have the '83 drum brake rear end I'd like to buy the driver's side backing plate from you. Getting the plate off the axel requires the bearing to be pressed off first and that's a job best done by a shop with a press so if you don't want to get involved in that I'll buy the axel assembly from you.
