82 Oil cooler or 84 Oil Cooler

Allrighty then, So i am getting a SWEET!!! deal on an 82 engine with all the accessories (oil cooler, alternator, pump, air pump and so on) and I am wondering which Oil cooler is better???

I still have the accessories from the 84 engine that i poulled from my chassis (GSL)

Is it easy to make the 82 Oil Cooler (water) compatable with the 84 chassis or would It be better to replace it with the air oil cooler (84) ((what would that entail??)

thanks in advance.

cheers'

I've heard that the pre-83 oil coolers are better, but my 85 cooler seems to be doing the job quite well. The only things you'd need to buy apart from mounting hardware is the mount for the oil filter and the oil lines, unless you have good ones. But now you have coolant lines AND oil lines that could spring a leak. The 85 can leak as well - it develops a crack in the housing over time and needs to be replaced or welded. The o-rings also need to be replaced from time to time.

82 has the air/oil oil cooler and 83-85 has the water kind. The water one sucks, use the air one. It should just go in with not too many problems from what I'm told. Haven't gotton a chance to switch the one on my 83 yet.

the oil to water oil cooler equiped cars seem to develop the dreaded oil O-ring leak more often, indicating the oil gets hotter. I would run the oil/air cooler just to get a more reliable, less likely to leak system, even they cool equally.

rerouting and findind a new heater hose to connect the open end left by removing the water/oil cooler

other then that everything should bolt right in

be careful when removing the oil lines from the block and cooler as it will crack and strip the threads (ask me how I know )

I also recomend going to rb or mazdatrix and ordering a new set of oil cooling lines

They sell heater hose plugs at part stores...just show what size hose end you are trying to plug off. They fit right over the ends which won't be used on the oil cooler mod. You will also want to buy the heater hose for a '82 RX-7 so it will hook right up.
