82 engine swap to 83 then problems......HELP!

Changed the motor to a 83 .In the process the ditributor cap was removed by the wreck yard before I got the 83 engine, I then put another distributor in but the mark on the engine is gone(warn off over time I guess). Is there anyway of figuring out where the timing mark should be? I also have very few lights in my instrument cluster now when I turn the ignition to on....any help there as well? I fried my starter trying to get it running last time(so that will have to be replaced) I was thinking that I could take out the distributor each and ever time and alighn up the marks on it, drop it back in and then try like a clock effect by marking and removing each and every time. Just wonder if there is a better way?
thanks in addvance to whom ever can help me out here. I have had this car for 10 years now and would like to get her back on the road! I now have some spare cash so I hope I can get her up and running again.

I'm not quite sure about this, but I think that if you pull the eccentric shaft pulley off, there is a key that should be aligned north to south. Make sure it is and then go from there. Also, see if you can have someone crank it while you shine a timing light at the pulley. It should come close to the little peg sticking out of the engine block.

Close but no cigar :)

If you pull the dizzy out, there is a tally mark on that has to be aligned with the other mark on the driven gear.. (note: there are 2 roll pins on the dizzy gear those ARENT the mark Im refering too, this looks like a small divot) Align those marks and put the dizzy back in W/O moving it..

The keyway that 85RXGS is talking about should be pointing almost to 9 o clock...

ALSO... if you yank off the clutch inspection plate on the pass side you will see some marks on the flywheel(if its stock) ans a mark on the rear plate...line them up, you should be on the timiing mark then... line up the dimple and the little mark on the dist and drop it in...BALM timed

Theres a plug near the firewall, similar to the plug on the rear of the alternator, where the wiring harness comes out. It runs the idiot lights. Leaving it unplugged will cause some of them to not illuminate.
