79 SA pressure plate alignment
 

I just got the clutch and pressur eplate installed and was about to work on the troubel of getting the tranny back in. Now, I am unsure if I aligned the pressure plate properly upon the flywheel. I read somewhere the are pins on the flywheel that go through the PP, but there are no such pins on the flywheel.

So I am wondering if there is some other mark to go by to align it properly. I just want to be sure about this before I put the tranny back on completely only to find out I screwed up.

It's a 79 SA, and its almost ready to be running again after sitting in a field for 4 years.

You have to use a line up tool to to put the plate in correctly, It is small and blue with spines and goes through the plate in the bearing hole, Cost is about $3 at any of the parts stores.

That's the alignment tool for the clutch disc. I did that. I am asking the PP upon the flywheel. The Clutch disc; I used an alignment tool for it.

I am wondering if I need to somehow align just the pressure plate onto the flywheel. I did some searching and read about 10 threads but they were vauge on it, though it was mentioned.

On the later ones there are alighment pins. If your's doesn't have them, I don't see if it makes any difference. If you had your flywheel resurfaced, the pins are removed. If there are no holes left over for the pins, bolt it up.

I think the (3) dowel pins were used from 83 and newer. On the 79, there are 2 holes )opposite each other) that have a short recess before the threads start. There should be 2 bolts with a short shoulder. These bolts go into the recessed holes, and align the PP. If these bolts are put into the other holes, the head will not contact the surface of the PP.

Thanks Rouge Wulff! that's like the 10th clear answer you've given me on this project, ha! Alright, I think it's fine then. I put the 2 longer bolts with the shoulder into the proper places. It was easy to tell where to put them since the holes for them had the thread begin deeper into it.

So it won't matter what direction the PP is rotated in relation to the flywheel so long as I have the 2 longer bolts in their appropriate places? I'm gonna go get this tranny on there now then. Can't wait to drive it! I'll post some pics of the re-carpeted and cleaned up interior when I'm done.

Hey, glad to be of some assistance. The PP shouldn't matter how it is put on. so long as the correct bolts are used in those 2 holes.
Granted, the dowel pin system is a little better, prolly why it was adopted when the 225mm clutch was introduced in 1983.

I got it on! thanks guys! I just ended up laying parallel with the car and pushing the tranny with my legs and pushing it up with my arms.

Tommorrow I put on the drive shaft and starter, then back her out. After that, The FD comes in for a rebuild and street port.
