79 RHD project.. need suggestions
 

Just got a gsl-se motor that will be going into my 79 RHD. What rotors should I use (91)? Gonna streetport it also. Any more ideas? I want a powerfull n/a motor. suggestions please. Also injection or carb?

Where did you get your right hand drive RX7's?

I bought my 77 RHD RX7 Savannah at the Salavation Army for $500!
Of course that was just a stroke of luck.

What is winter like in Las Vegas?

Typically G.I.'s bring em over, Ive seen a couple. Ran into one guy in Utah that had one he had brought over. That was 15 years ago. Was cruizing the strip looked over and seen a 5 year old kid driving this car, bout crashed. Talked to the guy and he was stationed in Japan and he brought it back with him. Its not as easy as it used to be, I was going to bring back an R34 GTR, would have ended up costing about $25K or more and there was no guaruntee that I would have been able to even drive it. Then they started talking about crash tests, so needless to say there is no Skyline in my driveway.

Winter in Las Vegas... not bad.. coldest is 38 deg or so. Even get some snow every 5 yrs or so.. just for 15 min. I was stationed in Japn and brought back a 79 and 80. Ju8st completed a 4 port 13B in my 80 and going to start the 79 project..

hi gonzz,

the gsl-se rotors are the heaviest of the bunch. if you can find some 89-91 they're much lighter. odds are all anyone will have to sell are 86-88 rotors which aren't bad at all!!!!

what happened to your 4 port motor?

89-91 rotors have 9.7:1 compression which would be nice for a n/a machine. but they are harder to get than earlier ones.

Stil got my 4 port. Getting a motor together for my 79 RHD. 4 port is in the 80 RHD

I wonder if that is how my Savannah got into the coutry.

Should have brought over a Skyline GTR.....

Ok so use 89-91 rotors.. everthing else use from a -se?

Yeah, I tagged you on a thread a couple of days ago about the same thing. Even in Japan the first one was a 78, I had one in Misawa AB, why you insisting yours is a 77? Time to fess up.

when using rotors from another engine, you need the entire rotating assembly. that way it will all be in balance. the rotating assembly is:

2 rotors
1 e-shaft
1 front counterweight
1 rear counterweight + aftermarket flywheel/or the stock heavy flywheel that came with the rotating assembly.

i have never heard of a 77. i have heard people refer to their cars as 78, because they were made and purchased in 1978, but as a 79 model. just curious too.

They actually came out in '78 in Japan. They started shipping them to the States in '79. The FD's (3rd Gen)go to 2000 or 01 cant remember, but the last one was a watered down version, really cheap suspension etc.

now can second gen rotors work with the gslse rotor housings? I have been told before that there will be slight clearance issues and that something was not the same.

On a side note:

I have an 89 gtu model rx-7 for sale if you like. The car is very rough looking, has a few rust holes and some dents but I bought it as a daily driver. Anyways when it's cold it starts and runs good. When it's warm it just cranks and won't start without me pushing the gas pedal. New plugs and wires, I just put in a brand new oem water pump, thermostat and radiator hoses, and fuel pump. smokes a little on start up but doesn't smoke when warm. Odometer reads 190k, don't know history of car. Im either gonna sell it or strip the motor tranny and taillights off of it and junk the car keeping the motor for a nice na project someday. $800 bucks takes it, thats what I have into it this far.

BTW, Vegas has some sweet snowboarding at MT Charleston, I was there a couple of weeks ago, much better snow than big bear!

Sent you an email. In the above post it should read a new fuel filter, NOT fuel pump. I also changed all of the belts a week ago, same time I did the water pump and stuff.

thanks guys. I think I will go with this setup. 13B housings w/ 12A plates. rotating assy for a 91 N/A. What do you think on power? Holley 650 DP for carb. RB street port exhaust
