79 rear seat

How rare are the 1979 rear seats? I know a majority of the 79's in japan had them but anyone know roughly how many in the us had them? Also if you do have one in your car how do you like it? Thanks ahead for your advice and comments

I had the pacifica rear seats in my fb for about a year, they are useful if you have children under the age of 9, or midget friends.

Howmuch did you pay for it? Was it an easy install for you? Thanks for the advice

Can't speak for the 1st gens but my FC has rear seats. As far as carrying passengers, small children only. I keep the seat back laid down all the time which increases hatch space quite a bit. As far as install not hard at all if you have all the hardware.

Thanks Trochoid, thats what I was afraid of. It would be cool for awhile but i'm sure I would want the space after a short while. Do the seats in the 79 fold down as well?

The back seats do not fold down.

They are really only good for one thing:

I know some guys have adapted 2nd gen rear seats into the FBs. Not sure if they fit the SA chassis but I suspect they would.

ALL JDM RX7s (1st gen) and European models had rears seats. US-spec SA didn't, if for no other reason than the area these seats occupied was reinforced with braces in US cars to meet DOT crash standards. So JDM seats would not fit w/o chopping away back there. Aftermarket seats were molded to avoid frames, but result is they were not as elegant as OEM units. Don't believe the aftermarket units would fold down, whereas the OEM ones did.

also for some reason the fb's do not have the abstruction in the bin area that the sa does. i have a rear seat in one of my fb's

Iwantagofast 09-12-09 11:03 AM

Thanks for all the input guys. So in your opinion is $100 for a back seat that needs new skin high?

Is there a specific place spot that you would mount the seat belt anchor?

Iwantagofast 09-12-09 11:04 AM

Do you have any pictures ViperGTS 3?

waysrx7 09-12-09 08:28 PM

1979 RX7 aftermarket rear seat, No it doesn't fold down and the seatbelts are quite sketchey. I haven't seen pictures of other rear seats like this one so I would say it's more rare than the factory ones.

Actually the aftermarket one is much more common when i was looking for one for a friend all i could get were the aftermarket ones. The factory ones will fit nicely in a FB, def not in a SA very easy to instal. I used them quite effectively uptil my girls turned about 8 they could still fit back there with no problem just we don't use it anymore. Just like others have said though unless they are young they won't fit, and they are very difficult to get carseats that fit in them as well. The factory SA/FB rear seat does fold down, if you were to modify a FC seat to fit they can work however it really isn't worth the trouble. If you just have to have one i am sure that given enough time and money one can be had from europe or aisa but stay away from the aftermarket ones they were honestly a cheap stopgap measure when JDM stuff wasn't there. IF you look in the archives for rear seats I have previously posted pics of factory ones.

RX7 Back seat questions

OK,as far as i know none of the sa/fb came with back seats here in the USA

OR SO I'VE READ......

There is this a S3 model sitting of on a back road near me that i spotted a month or so back, and today me and a buddy went and checked it out,the front end is kinda rough, but easily fix-able.but i was looking through the window at the interior, and it has imaculate red/maroon leather front seats AND BACK SEATS!

HOW RARE IS THIS CAR?? cause i am thinking about picking it up and restoring it for meets and car shows.

ANY INFO IS MORE THAN WELCOME!!! :icon_tup: :)

Jeezus 09-21-09 09:01 PM

You could get them as options or as aftermarket kits. My car has a set.

90turbo1 09-22-09 12:51 AM

a guy that I work with used to be a master Mazda tech back in the 70's through 90's he said that the seats were sold through parts departments as a dealer accessory and they were very very expensive.

minde doesnt look anything like the one pictured above and it does fold down.

I put them in my 1981. Took them out and put them in my 1983.IMHO fairly useless. Much like the rear seat of an MGB-GT. But it was a talking point among my RX& friends.
