2nd gen turbo on a 12a
 
i have a 82 RX 12A, and a friend of mine has a turbo from a 86 that hes willing to sell for 100 obo just cuz he has no use for it and i was wondering what would all have to be done to run it on my 12A as a blow by setup? mine has 68k original miles, bone stock, and is an automatic.

Anything can be done with enough time and funds. You would need to find a manifold. Which would have to be a one off deal. That would be the biggest hurdle.

68k and an auto tranny, add a turbo, no. Headers and a good carb upgrade, Sterling, Mikuni, Weber or Dell.

If you don't already have a decent grasp of what you need to do to make it work, you're nowhere near ready to attempt it. Not trying to be mean here; I speak from experience when I say there's a lot of problem solving, creativity, and engineering involved to complete a project like this. So if you're serious, start reading. This forum and theturboforums.com will be your best resources for blow-through info.

Crazyk82 says the biggest hurdle is the exhaust manifold, but I disagree. The biggest hurdle is figuring out how to boost-prep a Nikki carb or find someone who'll do it for you. bad 83 knows how to do it, as does Robert at RotaryShack, so I'd start by contacting one of them (Robert seems to be kinda flaky lately, so bad 83 is probably your best bet). If you switch to a Weber or a Holley, there's more information available, but that's more money and you'd have to figure out how to rig up the auto tranny stuff.

Once you've done your research, post up your specific questions or PM me or one of the others here who've done it. I'd be glad to help if I can.

alright so i read that whole 9 page thread about that DRAW through on a 1st gen and i've been emailing robert for about a week or so.

i was mainly interested in doing the turbo so that i could actually have a quick rotary powered car without spending $1500+ just to swap in a stock 13B or $2000+ swapping in one of my V8s. especially since i've already been planning on swapping an aluminator with twin prochargers into my 94 T-bird

You own a rotary car so you should get used to spending money on it. It could very well be easier/cheaper to swap in a TII engine and trans, however you'll learn more by putting a turbo on the 12A.

well i don't want to spend that much on this one solely because i want to get a 2nd gen and swap in a 20B and build the hell out of it, and that will be my baby

You don't want to spend much on this one but you want to make a built 20B for a FC?

Plan on taking out a 2nd mortgage. Or having a FC sitting in your garage for 5+ years waiting to be finished.

Blow thru is a good way to keep the costs down. Cheapest option is to boost prep the stock Nikki, last I heard bad83 can do this for you, you'll be lucky to get a response from rotaryshack.

Other than that, wideband, intercooler, boost referenced fpr (Mallory 4309 is one), fuel pump, plus plumbing

I've been slowly accumulating the parts and plan on doing this in the next few months.

Dont start this project with cheap in mind i started my turbo project at 17yrs old it just now being finnished Now 19 i thought i could do it all cheap and fast I was wrong!
Small parts list of what you need for blow through setup is s4/s5 Turbo/exh man, Carb Hat/Boost prepped carb, rising rate fpr,Fuel pump, Locked dizzy, Wide band 02, and all the plumbing (Oil lines,coolant lines, ic piping) not to mention a frount mount If you choose wich i would recomend, bov, boost controller, gauges.

There is alot of work involved with boosting a 12a Even after you buy the basics of what you need. If you have beehive the swap to a fmoc is a must. Now idk how fittment of the turbo an exh manni would be with a stock carb and intake Beacuse i have always had my dhla.
With the side draft you cant just bolt up the turbo and exhaust mann because it sits right on the bottom of the intake Man.

Thit requires you to buy an additional Header flange and find a good welder (if you cnt yourself) to get someone to weld your steel flange to your cast iron Manifold Not Easy!!!!!(Had my Teacher Help i had to torch the hell out of the cast iron before even attempting to do so) Once that is done and you proceed to bolt it up you will then realize that the stock exhaust studs arent long enuff to go through both the header flange and manifold and have enuff thread to get the nuts on!!!! Yea i was madd!!!

There is a lot of things needed to do this to your 7 succesfully trust me do research!!! And even once yo do all of the above you will probably do what i did and then realize now you want a lsd rear end (Thanks Rob) because 1 tire friers are not cool and then you need new rims unless you keep the 4x110. Then you will finaly get the chance to drive it again and then tune to only realize you want more boost then previously intended...Safely Soo you spend more money on wtr/mth Inj. like me. Still not complettely done With mine im now working on ign setup Want to go msd 6al just tight on $$$$.

Then after that i still wont be done because i want to rework the suspension to handle it all and Then make it all pretty!!! All together i probably spent over 3 grand already just on the boost setup with atleast another 2-3 grand more i would like to spend. I also did all work myself mostly at school including making my own exhaust, boost preping the carb,making the carb hat, and locking the dizzy all of wich arent cheap if you cnt do youreslf expect to spend atleast a grand on just this! If after reading all of that if you beilive you have the money/time/tools/Knowledge/patience needed to do so and still want to Then by all means Go BOOST!

thanks for all the info and advice. after researching and planning for a while here, my friend that initially told me to go turbo is now telling me that i should push this off for later and prep mine for spray. should i consider it?

Honestly I myself wouldnt Jump into any N20 project i think bottles are for babys. Just like boost to safely run spray your going to need suporting mods but it can probably be done alot cheaper and be less time consuming than boost and still make good power but how long will it last?

trust me you go in thinking cheap and you come out broke haha.... same happened to me and im not evevn done buying shit yet but my "500$ max, used parts" project turned into about a 2,000-2,500$ project and ALOT of engineerig and scratching plans and redoing plans...also read a book called turbochargers by Hugh MacInnes...its great! i sugesst spenign some time at your book store

and btw even tho turbo projects are expensive and time consuming i believe if you do it all yourself it will still be cheaper than just buying a camden.......camden has got to be the most expensive way to blow up a 12a
