2nd gen steering wheel on 85 SE
 

I purchased a 90 GXL leather wheel and I thought it would be a direct fit. However, the wheel doesn't seem to go all the way down on the shaft to get a connection for the horn etc. Its sticking out maybe about 1/4 of an inch or so.

I thought the longer 'center piece' was blocking it from going all the way down the shaft, but now it may appear that the 'center piece' may be just a fraction smaller than the shaft itself.

Anyone done a swap like this and run into anything similiar?

I am not sure if the 90 shafts are different than the 88's, but my friend has an 84 se with a 10thAE steering wheel on it and it fits fine. I will try and get him to look at his wheel and reply about spacing or anything. I don't recall his horn working either.

a company previously called rotary connection did the swap. jenn said that they fit it on fine but you needed a metal shim for the horn connection to work. if you ask nicely, maybe brent will go measure it. ;)

If this gets the horn working, does everything else work too? Or will the turn signal canceler not work (this is what I have found on the search, but have not been able to try yet.)

If you can find a FD one it will fit just right. I think you need a spacer or something for the horn and turn signal canceller to work if you install a FC steering though.

I have a 2nd gen steering wheel on mine and everytning works perfectly. You need to grind down the back side of the 2nd gen "center piece" a ways. Once you get it far enough to go all the way on you will need to add a washer on the front underneath the locknut. If you don't the steering wheel will be loose. It only took me a few miuntes with a die grinder to make it work but it is perfect.

rotarygod, when you say grind down, do you mean to bore out the hole a little or cut off the part that is protruding out?

Well I don't know how well the shim works cause the horns don't work at this moment (could be fuses or wires or anything I haven't checked into this) But I'll try and get you some measurements by this weekend and or see what else needs to be done to mount that sucker up. (gotta get into the column and fix the brights anyhow) So I'll get on that like wednesday night and see if I can't have you some measurements then.

Cut off. When you cut a little off the back of the "shaft" (not the actual steering shaft but rather the steering wheel section that goes onto it) the steering wheel goes on farther and this is how the turn signal canceller works. For me the horn was just a plug and play system. I may have bored out the hole opening a little but I think this was before I figured out what to do. As far a I can recall I didn't have to do that.

Alright Nick-7 and i put our heads together and figured out what the problem seems to be. The horn contact on the back of the wheel seems to be too short to reach the contactor on the sencond gen wheel by about 1/4 of an inch. If there once was such a spacer on my vehicle it seems to be gone now and thus the cause of the malfunctioning horn. Other than this I can find no evidence of any other modifications to the wheel itself to make it fit. Yours is similar to mine in style and by what I can see in the pictures the same in mounting. Like rotarygod said, just bolt it on.

I have a second gen wheel on mine also. To get the horn contacts to touch I just loosened the multi function switch and slid it up a little bit.
