has anyone done this put a ele. ignition from a 2nd gen in replace of the stock gslse distributor can it be done?????????

Not directly. The 2nd gen has a CAS (Crank Angle Sensor). It needs an ECU with other sensors to interface with the coils. An aftermarket standalone will do it or you could use a 2nd gen ECU work. Not really worth the time in my opinion, but you can do it.

I am working on a circuit to let you use the 2nd gen CAS with the 2nd gen coils in a 1st gen. I will keep you posted.

Unfortunately, not. I haven't had the time and getting some more testing for the TT circuit takes priority (speaking of which I am setting up a test setup right now. Just trying to find a thermistor locally so I can rig up a temperature reading for the back of the 2nd gen coil pack). If I have to, I'll get one for digikey or something, but I hate to pay a $5 min order fee + $5 shipping for a part that costs $0.80. :)

I know basically how to make this work. The biggest trick is to design it well so future upgrades are easily incorporated (for instance, start with a fixed advance curve, then make user programable, add boost retard, etc.).

So back burner for right now, but may end up being a winter project. We'll see.

Glad to hear you're still around man... I've been fielding questions on the TT setup for months now, because some people seem to think this was my project. :)

Thanks. Been busy with work, buying/working on a house, etc. Up to recently, I only had time to scan through this section like once a week (no time for posts) and reply to any pm.

I have to really work quick on this stuff because I will start doing some consulting work on the side fairly soon (pay is real good, but will eat up extra time), but the hours are flexible at least. Such is life. When there is time, there is no money and visa-versa. Hard to find a balance.

You *know* I'm holding out for the CAS-based stand-alone ignition controller. I've only been hinting that someone should make one for years now ;)

Still got the original TT box, but held off installing it when things started to get wonky, so even figuring out the problems there would still be cool for me. But really a stand alone CAS-and-2nd-Gen-Coil based ignition system would rock.

I believe that somebody has worked out the resistors needed to make the TT function without blowing coil packs. I don't have the details, but would be interested in finding out what they did.

Stock ignition sucks! I want my power back dammit! lol

You guys should remember me, since I PM'd you a few times on this subject. Addict, glad to hear you are back on the TT circuit. You da man when it comes to this. Anyway, after all my conversations with you guys and RX-7 doctor, I am beginning to understand the ignition quite well on our 1st gens. All I can say is that anyone wanting to change over to the 2gen distributorless set-up should re-think it and consider the gains to be made verses the time and money put into it. The whole point of the 2GenDFIS is to get the benefits of the 2Gen ignition on a
1st gen. With the TT circuit installed with it, I can't see how the 2Gen distributorless ignition would be of any gain. I should be getting my new 2Gen coil pack tomorrow in the mail to hook up the system on my SE. I will wait for Addict to work out the bugs before I do the TT.

Performance wise, I don't think distributorless will be a benefit in most cases (over the TT). Where a distributorless system will benefit is mostly boosted guys or guys that want a customized advance curve. Having a distributorless setup, it is really easy to have this. Most of the boosted guys lock their distributors at a safe advance. The problem is that the timing is less than ideal under low loads/boost. A distributorless system could be setup to retard timing by x amount for every 1 psi of boost for instance. Should be a fun project. Just need to find the time (I know it will take a lot of time to get it right).

If I can find a thermistor locally, I'll do some TT testing this weekend. If not, it'll be a couple weeks as I have to leave for Paris for a couple weeks either this Sunday or Monday for work. Should be back around Oct. 12th, maybe sooner.
