2004 13b renesis in a 1981gs
Hi all, been awhile
I was given a 2004 13b renesis and am thinking of putting in my 81GS, some questions 1 has someone done this? 2 will the trans end up mounting in the regular mounts? 3 can i use a 13b FB front cover on the renesis for using a dizzy and mechanical oil injection? 4 is it worth the power increase over a 13b FB? 5 I have a Lake City Rotaries short intake, use it or use the fold over intake on top of the engine? I used to ice race a 1985 RX7 GSL with a stock block 13B with a lightened steel flywheel with a LCR intake and dellorto carb into a heavy duty header ( custom built so it wouldn't burn out) with a cherry bomb to "quiet" it down a little. All these parts are availible to use on the renesis Used a KIA sportage front diff for the gear ratio. Yes it was fast, no you can't drive it, move that subaru out of the way your to slow! |
If you are going to carb it you would be much better off starting with a standard 13B, it has more potential.
|
so your advice is to use a 13B from a FB for the swap, sounds like I should use the race car engine
|
Its been done using EFI and gets about 207whp out of it but thats with some internal work and
careful tuning of the ECU maps. I doubt you could get near that with carbs. It was BrewerBobs car done by Brian TiTaniumTT, see rotary car club dot com for details. |
I have a friend who has this full conversion done in his car. PM me and I will give you some information to contact him. It was Expensive and they spent hours upon hours of Ecu tuning to get all 6 ports to properly open.
|
I was just going to get the adapter plate for the renesis to 86 - 88 13B for the LCR intake and use the dellorto carb front cover of a 86-88 for engine mount and dizzy/oil injection and install it, maybe the lightened flywheel with an automatic counterweight and the 6 speed
|
The front cover from earlier motors will need some machining to make them fit right I believe. Just a heads up.
|
ok, so will the 2004 6 speed bolt to the 86-88 13B?

I think the RX8's Speedo is ran through the ABS sensor IIRC. There is no traditional speedometer cable, just a high speed CAN bus in the back of the cluster.
|
Hawk - sorry to say but I'm a parts hoarder and it took me ALOT of years to find the intake for my race car so it's not going anywhere
Jeezus - got the speedomter taken care of, got an old gps so it's got the speed on the screen iduley - I got a T2 so I could rob the flywheel and clutch but would rather use the lightened flywheel, I'll have to get the driveshaft from the RX8 for the front slider and u-joint assembly so far the problems are not insurmountable |

Doneuald - No need to apologize, I think all 1st gen guys are hoarders in some sort of way. I know I purchased my Lake Cities Rotary manifold straight from Skip Goreman back in '89 or '90 and I would not sell it. I have thought about starting a hoarder thread just to see what everyone out there is hoarding. I know I have a few parts that I may never use, but I would probably never sell. |
1) Here's one example
3) Most of the front cover bolt holes line up, but something custom will have to be done about the water pump. The pump housing is built into the Renesis front cover, but no prior water pump will bolt up to the front iron. Half of the bolt pattern is the same each side, but the overall width is shorter. I think the easiest way to get a Renesis into an early car is to fab some engine mounts. Remember the exhaust has side ports, so you'll have to make another header or use the stock manifold. |
best bet with the Rx8 stuff is to make some mounts, and mount the engine in stockish, and just buy a computer to run it. the stock computer is complex, but anything aftermarket will do ok.
stock exhaust manifold won't hurt power |

If you decide to go with a wrap around style manifold and are looking to sell your lake cities rotary manifold, please contact me. I have one for my 12a but would be interested in one for a 13b for another project.

Looks like the 86-88 13B will be a drop in and be the least work
Does anyone here use a Richard Sohn adapter and run 2 stroke oil? HMMM got some time to think on it though |

will look into the pump mod, I used to run 50/1 premix when ice racing
