1st Gen Turbo Conversion - Please read!

Hey all, I see this subject come up more and more often now.

So since I have been planning my conversion, and I see there are more who are wanting to take the challenge, I've decided to help everyone out.

What I'm going to do it build a webpage with all the info we have gathered from here on the Forum, and from those who I have seen do it.
And I'd like those who have done, or are currently doing it to send me any info, pictures, how to's, ideas, or any info which can help current builders and the future builder of Turbo 1st gens get a better understanding of what all is involved.

So as with the My7 1st gen photo page. I want to do this one based on Turbo cars.

A one stop place for all the info you will ever need for the conversion, and with everyones help, we should be able to get the whole thing from start to finish. so anyone want to help?

I think that is a great idea.... my 85 tub is currently sitting in my driveway and as soon as I finish my work bench I'm pulling her in the garage and striping her down to NOTHING and going to completly rebuild her w/ a wide body and t2 motor (hopefully rebuilt and street ported w/ a large turbo hehe we'll see) and I plan on putting up a web page on everything I do step by step. I have the web space sitting there and I have the digi cam and know how. But yet I still look for info considering I don't know anyone in my area w/ rotory or rex experience :( there is a shop here in AZ i think but their like 2 hours away....

We'll see how things go and I wish you the best of luck on creating the web page. As I find new info I'll send links your way :)

I think that this is an excellent idea. I have a friend who has already done his and is currently in the process of doing mine while I'm across the waters(Korea). Let us know when you get the site going and I'll have him send some info.

Here's what I'm planning:

12A engine

Holley 390cfm double pumper

Garrett turbo from a T-bird Turbo Coupe (blowing through carb)

Custom water-air intercooler (read: making one out of A/C parts)

Welded differential (LSD? Who needs an LSD?)

Here's what I'm hoping:

Custom tunnel-ram style intake manifold
Ball valves mounted as close as possible to secondary ports
Ball valves controlled like 6-port actuators, but by manifold pressure
Bridge ported secondaries :D

Sanity is NOT one of my virtues.

Let's SEE how long a 12A tranny will hold up :D

(edit: corrected spelling errors)

These are a few questions That I could think of off the top of my head. I'm sure I can come up with more for you.

Can you use the stock (1st gen) tranny? How?

What does it take to get a T2 tranny in the first gen chassis?

What are your options for the rear end?

What radiator do you use and how do you mount it?

What size FMIC can be used in the 1st gen? How do you mount it? Is there one already made that can be used or should one be built?

Whats the best way to wire/mount the ECU?

Great idea Max! Hopefully I'll have something to contribute to the web page but first I'm in the middle of getting rid of the storage bin rust on my car. Have the sections cut out of both bad and good cars now all I'm waiting for is for my friend to get me the welder:) I also fixed the steering column on my '83 a couple days ago (no more in and out) so if you or anyone would like to know how to do it just send me a PM.

Oh yeah, have any pics of your wide body Max?

1. use a 12a flywheel and aprroprate clutch combo.

2. 12 tailshaft and shifter assembly, with approprate clutch assemblys/flywheel

3. lots depending on $ and what you want to do.

4. stock radiator if in good condition will work but not for extended periods. i saw a 300$ summit radiator that will fit int he front end just need a mount.

5.
you can use a izusu one or starion or can talk to rice about getting his custom one that he makes. which i am going to use ;)

6. get a aftermarket if your after power same amount of money used on piggy backs will get you a nice haltech or wolf

Hi,
Excellent idea. I have wanted to put a turbo motor in my GSL SE, but nobody can give me a straight answer on how to do it. The main problem I run into is the wiring. When you do this site if you could get a wiring diagram on how to wire everything up stock and also aftermarket (Haltech, Wolf 3d, etc.). Just things like that and also the front cover business.
Thanks
Scott

Lookin good Max! Are you going to swap the -se stuff over to the widebody?

wiring is fairly simple with an aftermaket ecu. there is a aussy site around that shows a detailed wiring diagram for a series 5 motor and ecu into a rx3. which is similar to a first gen..

Is the T2 flywheel the same as a 84-85 13b flywheel . cause i want to get a lightweight flywheel on my current engine. And then i want to transfer it to my T2 when i get it.

no turbo clutch/flywheels are 240mm and 82 1/2 + n/a's are 225mm all the way to 91.
