Mazdatrix sells em:

I just separated the halves of my stock one and cut it down about an inch or so. havent gotten a chance to drive it yet cause the motor isnt finished yet, but it feels pretty good.

Miata short shifter. Do a search on it, I would link you but I am too lazy :(

Either the miata or the mazdatrix. I have the Mazdatrix one... its really good.

mazdaverx713b 01-07-09 10:55 AM

the mazdatrix shifter seems to be the most common shifter used in our cars. also as stated, the miata shifter can be used as well.

Do they fit all 1st gens, or is this another case where us 78-80 SA folk get forgot about as being first-gens too?

Far as I've been able to find, there are no straight-purchasable short shifters for SA's... I'd love to find one, so please, prove me wrong!

I think Trochiod builds his own you should check with him.

I got a 1980 SA and i put a fc regular shifter on it.
worked preaty good and was like 2 inches shorter.

that sounds promising for my '79 . I have my old 89 shifter I replaced with a Mazdatrix shortie on it .

Did you need to do any modification or bushings etc. to fit the 80????

No

The SA and FB shifters are very different

FB, FC, FD and Miata shifter is the same

hockeynightincanada 01-11-09 01:40 AM

It makes a huge difference. I got mine for 75$ but I would still pay $200 for it. You might want to try a miata shifter. The ones you want are the 90's ones I think. They are only $30 but they use a smaller thread pitch on the knob so you will need a S5 or later knob.

legokcen 01-11-09 10:40 AM

I installed a Miata Short Shifter. Didn't cost very much (~$50) and made a heck of a difference. I love it and would recommend it. It was an easy install and didn't take very long.

misterstyx69 01-11-09 01:04 PM

Karack has a write up..in the Sec Gen section Archives on Shortthrows.

i did the same thing. the fb one is like $200. i picked up a miata one on ebay for $18. had to sand down one of the bushings a bit to make it fit properly but it was easy and feels great.

woodonastick 01-11-09 03:16 PM

a friend let me have his mazda speed short shifter from his fc(s4). i then put it into my miata(NA), then to my fb(85). all bolt in. dunno if its all coincidence, but it worked out fine.

my84gslrx 01-13-09 01:16 PM

so if i have a 84 gsl i can use a miata short shifter?

Kim 01-13-09 07:48 PM

Yup

hockeynightincanada 01-13-09 10:53 PM

ahh i think im gunna just get anal and picky and pay the 200.
the reviews seem much more enthusiastic for that SS anyway, i appreciate it all, now i have an unrelated question.... centerforce stage II clutch... recommend, or is there somewhere else i could/should get an aftermarket clutch for an 83?

RX-7 Chris 01-14-09 10:27 AM

Do not buy a centerforce stage II.

I have one and it works but does not last long. I have about 25k on my centerforce and it is almost gone. I'm usually easy on it too.

Go with the RB if you want something a little beter. I will be geting one soon.

hockeynightincanada 01-14-09 02:25 PM

damn thats some doo doo, it sounded good on the website lol... my car still has the original clutch in it with 90k miles thats rediculous.

hockeynightincanada 01-14-09 02:28 PM

Spec Clutch Kit Stage 2???
